Stalling Dommie
 

My dommie had done 20000 miles and has never had a problem at all until recently. It's nothing Major, but it has started to stall at traffic lights now and again. I know its pretty vague but are there any obvious known bike faults that might cause this (like the needle wear on the F650 causing an icrease in fuel consumption etc).

My Dommie has done it from new! (now 13,000m), every now and again it stalls at the lights. Main dealer serviced since new as well, 'most of them do it' was their answer, and I think there was a thread on this a couple of years ago - seem to remember an after-market carb solved it, can't remember the make. I know it's no solution, but it's comforting to know you are not alone.
Upping the tick-over makes no difference to mine.
Do other Hondas with this engine have the same problem?
Sorry if this all seems a bit vague, hopefully someone else will post a definate answer.

Nope, thats all the answer I was looking for! I used to have an 89' dommie years ago and I had a feeling that one did it as well. I wont be bothering with any new carbs.

My XR 650L has the same engine and it started once to do the same.It was only with the engine not been totaly warm.I unscrewed the main needle a bit and problem solved(for my bike)

I would guess that you inadvertently moved or cleaned somehting else when you unscrewed the main jet a bit - that shouldn't effect idle.

did you already meticulously clean the slow running circuit? any dirt in the passages or idle needle will cause it to stall. is the idle mixture right? idle mixture screw set to get max idle revs. ie half way between faltering due to weak and faltering due to rich mixtures.

raising the float bowl fuel level 1mm might help as it makes it easier for the carb to pick up the fuel. its easy to go far too far when tinkering with this! its important to understand that I mean to raise the level of the fuel 1mm rather than add 1mm to the factory spec float height which would actually drop the fuel level in the float bowl.

I've heard the NX is afflicted by the dreaded choke plunger/cable problem that Transalps and Africa Twins get. A friend had one that also stalled like this. He cured it with a new choke cable and a clean up of the plunger. Hope that helps...

Check the carb diaphram very carefully for any splits/holes.It's quite a common cause of all sorts of bad running/poor fuel consumption problems,and unless anyone knows differently,replacements are a Honda only part(Dave Silver's...).Not exactly cheap either as they come as part of the plunger as one unit!Another thing i've come accross a couple of times before(especially on earlier models) is the carb-to-head rubber manifold spliting/delaminating.Easy to find this one,when the bike is ticking over grab hold of the whole carb as best you can and give it a bit of a wiggle.If the tickover does'nt change at all it's a good sign!
