Xl600lmf
Hi Folks,
I've just managed to pick up an 1985 XL600LMF from eBay, non running and I'm using it as a summer project ready for a trip in Autumn. I've been looking header pipes for it and would like to ask if anyone knows whether they're the same for the XL/XR600? Also, other than the obvious like Fuel tank, 1st gear, swingarm are there many differences with the XL600LMF from the XL and XR. I understand if it's a bit of a bone question but I'm trying to find (internet) parts for the 'LMF' and they're like hens teeth! So if I can find common parts with the bikes, it'll make life easier and still stay original. I'm getting back from a long stint in Iraq soon and I'm picking it up next week, soooooo looking forward to it and would like to post the progress with pics, etc. I'm used to Yamahas so this Honda will be interesting..! Any advice would be much appreciated! |
nice bike!!
If I get a bit of spare time I will help as much as I can... Check out the link on africa below...
Cheers Orrin |
Comparing a picture of the XL (from Google images) with my XR600 the header pipes look pretty much the same - as far as the join in the system about half way down anyway. Even if they're not an exact match they look close enough that a bit of "persuasion" would be all that was needed.
Some of the other parts - forks, bits of the frame, rear hub, have a family resemblance to my (87) XR so it might be somewhere to start if you've got a breakers you can visit rather than just buying and hoping on ebay. |
borexstroke
I agree, a lot does look similar and undoubtably there will be but I've heard the stroke is different on the XR from the XL.
There aren't any manuals that seem to cover the LMF. I'm wanting to avoid ordering parts and finding they don't fit, etc. It doesn't help that the LMF is as rare as hens teeth but that is also some of the appeal. I've emailed breakers around the country but due to this weekend I'm not expecting replies for a bit yet. Thanks |
Geoff,
For Honda offroad specific rather than overland travel specific stuff you could get in touch with these guys: Honda Trail Bike Forums Another friendly forum and they may be able to help. Regards Euan |

Hi,
The XR and XL do have different strokes, I have a XL fitted with a Dommie 650 engine but i'm using the XL header pipes and a XR600 exhaust and the only thing i had to modify was the hanger for the exhaust. Teedee |

Got it,
Yep,
I've managed the drive to Bristol from Edinburgh and the bike is now in Scotland 'the Nooo!' I've just made a start with opening it up and have found a could of nasty surprises and bodge jobs but it's not looking a complete disaster. I'll post pics tomorrow..! |
