XR400, whats this wire for??

I'm having a bit of trouble with my xr400. I've found a wire that i cant find in the manual and would like to know what it does.
as you look at the bike with the tank off the wires in question come out from the main loom about 2 inches back from where the earth wire connects to the coil mounting bracket.
there are 2 wires that run to a red 2 pin connector that has been tucked under the seat since i got the bike, 1 wire is green and 1 is brown.
does anyone kknow what they are for ??

Hi,

Can't get to my XR at the minute as it's 'trapped' at the back of garage.

Firstly, does 'bit of trouble' mean electrical problems, and where do the other two wires that are dangling on the left-hand side of the picture lead too?

You can get a 'road kit' for these bike's which includes indicators front and back, and a larger 'lighted' rear number plate holder. If yours has had these in the past and they've been removed, then that's where - from memmory - my rear indicators/rear light 'plugged' into the feed wire (under the seat).

If you still are scratching your head let me know and I'll dig my bike out and have a look.

thanks scoobie, i think its for the numberplate light even though theres none fitted. the other wires are from a non standard light/indicator/horn switch thats been put on, its got 3 wires that go to the horn, its coming off.

What was the problem that you were having with the bike anyway - may be able to point you in the right direction?

i'm not familier with the xr400 wireingloom but could it be of the sidestand? or doesn't the xr400 has a savetyswitch for that?

Easily solved;
On Hondas, the earth is a dark green wire, (a light green is the neutral switch feed wire). Brown is the feed wire for the tail light. So these two wires you have are feed and earth for the rear light. You may also find a green/yellow which is the brake light feed wire.
Hope this helps.
