XR650L vs NX650 (frames)
 

Hi Guys!

I have a question. Is there any reason I can't fit an FMF / Staintune header AND an XR650L muffler (both will go together 2-1-1 style) to my NX650? Better still, has anyone tried it?

On my old XR I had a Yoshi can and an FMF Powerbomb header and it was a great combination - very high performance, light and not too loud. On my beloved 1988 Dommie at the moment I have a tiny-diameter stock header and a quiet Lazer Produro can. I want more horses / torque without getting the old girl too stressed out.

The aim is to buy something from the US, probably on eBay, in order to exploit the choice available for the venerable XR650L. Whatever I choose the bike will be carefully jetted / tuned to suit, so no worries there.

I know the exhaust ports are the same. Good news.

I know the routing next to the engine is the same. Good news.

I don't know whether the XR pipe will foul the NX frame near the rear m/cylinder / footpegs. Possible problem.

I don't know if the rear subframe on an XR is relatively a lot higher (sounds likely) and whether a quick fabrication of a bracket will resolve this.

Had a think about this. This is what I reckon:

1 - take pic of XR650L engine with Powerbomb header.
2 - draw round header.

4 - *very* crudely register it to the XR engine shot:

Looks to me like I was right - the routing by the frame spar is not the same. On the plus side, it does look pretty close, within the tolerances for the rear exhaust joint.

Any ideas would be great, before I splash out on the hardware.

Tell you what. I've just bought an FMF powerbomb header, and FMF muffler for my XRL, and not yet fitted them. We meet up, and you try them on for size.

In return I pick your brain on the subject of Honda XRL's, and maybe some kind beverage.

What say you POB?
