Australia 2010 Seventh Annual HU Travellers Meeting
Australia 2010: Seventh Annual HU Travellers Meeting
Quote:
NOTE: Main days are Saturday / Sunday, but there will be lots of people on the Friday and Monday (arrivals Friday and Anzac Day stuff happening Monday). Danielle Murdoch, Glen Cochrane, and Guy Basile, (plus a lot of others) are the local hosts for this event - we're VERY grateful to them for stepping up and really making it happen with a lot of legwork and effort. So who's going?:Beach: |
Count me in, assuming I am back in Oz by then :)
Cheers TravellingStrom |
I am hoping to be able to make this, as long as I can get time off work.

I'll be there + ANZAC Day Services
Hi all, I'll be there.
BTW, that weekend is ANZAC Day Weekend in Australia, when we take time to remember those who have given their all to protect Australia. There will be a number of services around the place. For those interested, here are the details for the services in Cooroy: Sunday 25 April 2010. ANZAC Day Dawn Service 5:00 AM Sharp Get there early as 1400 turned up in 2009 RSL Memorial Park Diamond Street Gunfire breakfast $2.00 Gold Coin donation to go to their welfare program 10:30 March and Parade Cooroy Butter Factory and Arts Centre 10 Maple Street Memorial Service after the March and Parade Cooroy Memorial Hall Seating for 300. Standing room only for everyone else Luncheon for sub-branch members Non-members are welcome to use the bar etc, but the luncheon is strictly for sub-branch members. I will post up details of some of the other services in the very near future. Regards, Shane |
Excuse my ignorance - but what is a sub-branch member?
|
Quote:
And at a guess, if you don't know what it is either, you're probably not one of the privileged! ;) (We'll just have to go on the basis that if they won't have us, we'll just find somewhere better! ) |
A sub branch member is a member of the RSL, but not from this particular branch, so if you are a member anywhere of the RSL, you get in.

It was on our list of things to investigate. I will be up for the Dawn Service ride. I have organised our own 6 metre flag pole and Aussie flag for the HU Meeting site More info is coming in by the day, time is moving fast! Glen |
ANZAC Day Service - Noosa Tewantin Services Club
Hello Everyone.
The Noosa Tewantin Services Club will be holding services and have sent me an email with their details. We will need to watch this space for full information: __________________________________________________ ___ Dear Shane Thank you for your recent enquiry with regards to attending the ANZAC day service. Your guests and yourself are more than welcome to attend the service and ceremony and details of the times for this event will be advertised in the local Noosa News prior to the 25th. Please note, that the function which we hold at the club after the ceremony is a closed event for club members and their partners. Kind regards Pauline Ryeland Secretary __________________________________________________ ___ |
ANZAC Day Service - Eumundi
Hello again,
The Eumundi township will also be holding a morning ANZAC Day Service, from 7:30 Am to 9:00 Am. I have often found that the small town services the most moving and for international travellers, this is well worth the effort. Here is the email sent to me from the RSL Sub Branch President at Eumundi: __________________________________________________ ____ As Eumundi is a community centred town, the ANZAC Day service consists of a returned servicemen led 'community walk' along Memorial Avenue with wreath laying on the WWI and WWII memorial trees in the town., with the appropriate pipe band, speeches etc, school choir, culminating in the Last Post and Rouse followed by the minutes silence at the town's amphitheatre. Eumundi is only one of two towns in QLD with a memorial avenue and is unique in this aspect. We do not hold a dawn service but these are held in nearby, Tewantin/Noosa, Coolum or Cooroy. If you want to go to a dawn service, the one at Coolum can be recommended. A starting time for this is not known at this time but is usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours before dawn. On this years ANZAC Day, the Sunday Markets in Eumundi will be operating. After the service, which will be from 7:30 am to about 9:00 am, you may wish to visit the markets. Regards, Glenn Brown __________________________________________________ ____ |

HU Australia - Cooroy April 2010
Just want to say thanks to all the people who attended the meeting and so generously shared their time and knowledge with newbies like me. Tremendously enjoyable, despite a full day of rain. Hope Rob's not too upset about his grass being churned up; I know everyone was trying hard to minimise the damage.
Hoping to make the meeting in South Carolina in September. Congratulations on a fantastic idea.:funmeteryes: Defa |
Hi Everyone,
I just want to say thank you everyone for making this weekend possible, we had over 130 people arrive to this years Australian HU meeting. I want to thank all the volunteers for pulling togethers all the information we required to make this weekend possible. You guys were amazing, I could have never done it without you guys! Also to those volunteers who stepped up on the and helped out over the entire weekend. Thanks a lot. I specially want to thank Glen and Guy for helping me pull all the volunteers strings together to make this weekend possible. They ran around endlessly for the entire weekend, being plumbers, electricians, first aiders (ones still looking after our only incident!! Thanks Guy) For those who couldn't make it, we arrived Thursday night, to a wet ground which dried out over Friday only have it pour down with rain on Saturday. But this didn't stop everyone from arriving plus more... Presenters kept on talking until 2am... you know who you are Richard!! and then Sunday went off with hitch! We had a great line up and continued into the night also. Thanks again to everyone, our SPONSORS, supporters and the die hard people who hung around long enough on Monday to help pull down the marquee. Thanks Danielle oh and I will upload photos as soon as I receive them. |
I would like to thank all involved for a fantastic intro to bike travel. Our 1st meeting and definitely not the last. The weekends activities were 1st class.
Thanks again to all involved. Mike and Sally |
home. top weekend.

I enjoyed the weekend, that Postie bike certainly is a chick magnet!!! Well done everyone, we had a great team of helpers that made the weekend a lot easier. Thanks everyone Glen |
Great to hear all these positive comments. If anyone has any negatives or ideas about the weekend I would also like to hear them, so that it can be passed on for future meetings.
As far as I am concerned it seemed to be a great success and the best part is we raised over $2000 for the kids at camp quality. Well done to everyone that turned up. |
I had a fantastic time at my first HU meeting. I am looking forward to attending many more in future years with hopefully some of those being overseas.
Thanks to the organisers and presenters you did a fantastic job. |
My first HU meeting, thanks to the organisers and presenters, and the interesting people I spoke with. Hopefully make it to the next Oz meeting, wherever it is:thumbup1:
|
I also want to add my thanks to everyone (both organisors and presentors) for a fantastic event - it was everything I had hoped it to be; both inspirational and educational.
I only wish I could remember all the good advice and snippets of wisdom I heard over the weekend. But really the most important outcome for me was realising I can do it by myself and with the minimum of fuss - so I'm now planning the Vladivostok to Europe for mid next year. Martin KLR650 :mchappy: |
Great to hear that everyone had a good time and it all went well!
Thanks to you all for coming, and we hope to see you at a Meeting ourselves on day. And a very big thanks to Danielle, Guy, Glen, and a host of others who made it all possible! Also to the presenters who put on an amazing list of presentations, well done! We have a ton of great photos which will be posted over the next couple of days. We're working on next year, trying for one in the south and one in the north, so keep an eye on the meetings index page and of course the ezine for news as we work it out. all the best, Grant and Susan |

Despite the rain and the mud, a moment before Glen straddled the postie and I leaped on the back. Racing through the mud puddles and soggy areas of the campsite, I held my legs out of the mud spray zone calling out to all the happy campers '10 minutes to curtains! See you over there'
The seventh Australian Horizon Meeting kicked off at midday on Saturday the 23rd of April with the Red Bull girls handing out samples to everyone on site. Guy welcomed everyone to the meeting and laid down the ground rules... 'Do not turn the generator off! - it runs the water that feeds the toilets!' I think he was still a bit upset about having shit up to hie elbows in the early hours of the morning! Thanks Guy! I'm surprised you didn't shake my tent! We were extremely lucky to have so many presenters step up to the microphone. We had a huge range of countries spoken about. Russia, Mongolia, Middle East, South East Asia, North America, Central America, and South America. The only continent missing was Africa! Some spoke of their second time around and some spoke about the different types of bikes to take. One spoke until the early hours of the morning.... Errol Goodenough, kicked off the long list of presenters with a topic of ‘Tim Hortens-Maccas-Taco's & other atrocities’ he kept everyone stuck to their seats. At intermission, Guy shook the crowd up by announcing we were going to do our first draw from the raffle. This caused a tidal wave of people for the registration tent asking for tickets! Dennis Barber re-grouped everyone and chatted to people about turning his dollars into dust. I think we all know how that feels! Ann Drew stood up and spoke about their travels through Russia. Haydn and Dianne had a great digital presentation showing their trip from Jordan to Nepal. They kindly offered a copy of their DVD presentation up for sale, with all proceeds going towards Camp Quality. Richard Winters followed in last, talking about his trip through the America’s. His talk went on through out the rest of the night until the early hours of the morning. I heard he was still answering questions at 3 am! There were the few die hards who got up and headed off the to the dawn service - good on you guys for making that effort. I felts as if my tent would miss me too much and of course someone had to make sure the breakfast got underway! To match the weather we fired up Sunday with a stove and mattress display - were everyone brought out their best, latest greatest, oldest, self-built stoves. Some roared into life, mine set the table on fire and some didn’t start at all! I took a quick moment to make myself pretty for the day, standing under the hot shower I heard my name been called out to come and present my ‘Hilton in a small package’ - my air mattress! Luckily, for me Guy stepped in to keep the show on the road! GPS and other devices pulled a huge crowd, as we generally discussed the different types and what they can do for you. Everyone was able to add in their advice and experiences, while some questioned them and others looked baffled. What did happen to a good compass?? Cheryl stood up and spoke about her and David’s Trip titles a round the world trip and where once isn’t enough! They didn’t have a slide but Cheryl, managed to hold everyone attention by describing the journey in such great detail we could all visualise every moment. Glen and Leeann pull all their personals out on display for all of us to examine. I think I’m the queen of packing light, but even I learnt something from Glen. I had never thought of using bread tags for pegs! Thanks Glen. This demonstration was closely followed by Rob, our host from Tyres4Bikes who show us all how to change a rear tyre on a Richards bike. Everyone huddled in close, taking notes on every thing that spilled from the guru’s mouth. After a long morning, we broke for lunch, after lunch we had all sorts of bikes lined up from a postie to a BMW. Matz gave a great presentation of what type of bike for what kind of trip and everything to think about for preparing for a trip. This is where it got a bit tricky for us, two presenters hadn’t shown up so we has to re-arrange our schedule and pull forward Ken Taylor. Ken spoke about his trip from Australia to Ireland on a $500 Honda Transalp. Guy came up with a plan of having an experts panel after dinner followed by secrete woman’s and secrete mans things. I was asked to be sit down in line with all the experts ranging from short trips to Iron Butt contenders! I hate talking in public, but after I asked, I made sure I drank a few beers! It was interesting hearing the different people’s opinions and how they got their money to be able to travel, their favourite country and why and so on.... We broke the question and answers session to move into the secrete zone where all the woman huddled in the shed and the men spied through the gaps in the Marquee walls. The woman asked each other questions from (***deleted as we can not control which sex reads it.***). After much bantering from the men, we dissemble our tight group and joined everyone else. Thommo tested our tired minds and probably one too many beers as he managed to get a 15 mm long cricket trying to make a home in his ear. The only sober person in the group took him to Noosa Hospital. I would like to thank everyone who helped out, especially to the person who drove him to the hospital and to Guy and Sam who took him home with them and arranged for him to see a doctor in Brisbane the following day. Crawling into my tent late Sunday night, I was extremely tired but also extremely happy for the people I had meet and talked to over the weekend. To make this weekend possible I would like to thank the following people who help pull this whole event together. Sam, Mark, Helen, Lyn, Richard, Daniele, Shane, Graig, Oscar, Paul, Anthony, and Alana for chasing their tasks and getting the information back to me. Thanks to Guy and Glen help pull together all the information from everyone and made the decisions. Also during the weekend, we had many people put their hands up to help through out the meeting. Besides our original volunteers Dorothy, Thommo and Leeanne were on my beck and call. A huge thanks to the following companies who had a trade display and or supported our Camp Quality Charity by providing a prizes for our raffle. City Hire, Tyres4bikes, ARB 4x4, AdventureMoto Australia, Aussiebiker, Jesse Luggage, Trailzone Magazine, Andy Strapz, Biker Her, TeamMoto, Moto Components, Coastline BMW, Touratech. We raised over $2,000 for Camp Quality. |
