I am David Moores of St. John's, NL, your Event Organiser. You can contact me through the Events / Contact form: https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/contact/

Meanwhile, I am hunting for presenters - particularly today I would like to find a person or 2 who would present on the good and the bad of TOMTOM and GARMIN. I am NOT looking to do a comparrison piece, but rather a session on each.

Any takers??

Just signed up and paid today.

I had a great time at the Rice Lake event this past May and I'm looking forward to returning to NFLD.

I breezed through Gros Morne in June 2018 and can't wait to explore more of this beautiful area.

Question:
I booked the cabin/bunks for accommodations. If I find another person interested can I upgrade at a later date to the Lodge with 2 beds per room?

thanks
brian

Grant Johnson 8 Nov 2019 01:31

Just let us know anytime, and assuming there are rooms left, no problem!

I have one request David

Please keep this thread updated with changes. I along with many others do not use Facebook which appears to be the preferred method of keeping people informed.

At the Rice Lake Event (May 2019) many of us were caught off guard as to the changes. We were told at the event it was on Facebook and we should have read it.

We politely replied that the HU website clearly stated any changes or updates would be posted under the Event thread, which it wasn't.

I realize its more work for you and thank you in advance.
brian

Hi Brian, sorry the Ontario event wasn't updated on the HUBB, we try to do it, but sometimes it gets missed. :(
Good to hear that not everyone is on Facebook! NOT my favourite place.

Just saw this on the HUBB Calendar while planning our cross-Canada trip. The last (and first) meeting I attended was in Germany in 2014.

We were planning a slightly earlier schedule but we may be able to delay two weeks to fit this in on the last leg of our RTW trip back to FL.

Our final leg will begin in Vancouver, WA where our bike is stored (post arrival from Australia in Sep 2019) and we plan to take a few months to cross Canada. I'll probably ask in one of the other forums but if anyone has a suggested scenic route (preferably mostly paved or hard pack) from west to east let me know. We're not camping so would need lodging stops along the way. We'd like to transit Saskatoon as my wife's niece lives there!

In any event, the planned workshops and sessions look great and we'd love to be able to make the schedule work.

UPDATE:

We know you are wondering whether Horizons Unlimited events are going ahead as planned, and how that may affect your own travel decisions. Your health and well-being are our top priorities, so please take care of yourself and your family.

We are working with our local organising teams and event venues, and monitoring regional and global developments, including travel bans and restrictions on events. Decisions will be made together with the local organising team and announced as far in advance as possible.

We are also aware that the HU demographic skews a wee bit older, and our deepest wish is that your well-being remains intact. We also are very aware that the small communities our events are held in have very limited medical resources, and we don't want to bring the virus to them with a large group of people from all over the world.

Newfoundland and Labrador are in full lock-down, and restrictions will be eased VERY gradually. There is no doubt that events of over 10 people will not be happening until late this year if at all. Out-of-province visitors are currently not allowed, and that will take some time to ease, possibly not till fall. Some Ferries have been cancelled for the summer.

Therefore, we have POSTPONED HU Newfoundland to August 3 - 6, 2021.

This may change, so please stay in touch through this HUBB thread or social media. We will be providing updates on the 1st and 15th of every month, as best we can. Stay updated here: https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/covid

Please direct your questions to: events-c *at* horizonsunlimited.com

Or post general comments of interest to the event on this thread.

If you want to keep your registration to the new date, we will carry it forward for you. No need to do anything. Carrying your registration forward will help us out a LOT. Thanks!

For refunds, PLEASE REPLY to your original Registration Confirmation email to make it easier for us to find.

We will send emails announcing changes only to everyone already registered for an event with all needed details.

Thanks for your understanding in this difficult time.

Positive outcomes grow from staying true to what makes the global HU community special: inspiration, information, and connection through shared experiences, tolerance, and mutual kindness. Please continue to listen to and follow the advice of your local and national health authorities. Stay healthy so that we can all catch up later.

Remember that worrying does lower your immune system, so don't binge on news. And most importantly - take care of yourself and your loved ones!

Candubrain 12 Apr 2021 15:31

Will be getting my first COVID shot here in Ontario tomorrow, April 13th, the second is scheduled for Aug 3rd, which I'm hoping to shift because its during the HU event.

But that poses 2 issues, which I'm assuming can't be answered at this point.

1. If I postpone my 2nd shot until after the event will NFLD still allow me access if I'm not fully vaccinated, as well the possibility of diminished protection for me because I've pushed the vacination window.

2. If I can get it before the event, what is the time needed before it becomes fully activated to ensure protection and once again meet the requirements for NFLD to allow me access?

Registration opens May 1st, (I'm already registered from last year). Personally I don't see this happening this year either as I'm sure many are in the same situation as I. On the CBC today it mentioned that the new Brazilian strain is able to push through the Pfizer vaccine, this will only tighten the Atlantic Bubble.

Hate sounding like the glass is half empty.....just rambling while sipping coffee.

thanks
brian

VicMitch 12 Apr 2021 18:32

I would really like to attend, maybe even present if there is space. of course that would depend on the situation with the borders.

Newfoundland RT Riders 13 Apr 2021 14:54

We still have room for presenters! Best and easiest approach for all is for you to go to our www page and sign up - follow "Be a Presenter" from the lest in the top right of our page. This will will ensure we each have the information we need.

Just hang on a few days while I get Grant to provide a button to click on the Presenter Registration page!

David.

Newfoundland RT Riders 13 Apr 2021 15:00

To Brian - Candubrain - it is pretty much impossible to predict how things will go this year. We are doing very well here, but all that can change at the drop of a mask! I can only suggest you monitor the border situation, along wiht the general progress of counter-COVID measures everywhere. Our international border is one problem. But right now, even internal Canadian borders are quite problematic ...

That may take longer than David thinks as we have to be sure of food and accommodation pricing etc - for now, please add yourself to the All Event Updates List: https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/updateslist/ and when we open registration, we'll send a notice and a call for presenters - and yes we'd love to have you present! :)
thanks, Grant

fallingat120mph 30 Apr 2021 15:05

So I just received an email stating this event is postponed until 2022, correct?

I just want to verify this as I would be riding from Texas (as originally planned last year).

I never cancelled my entry/sign up and just wanted to verify in the event this happens, and we in the US can cross the border, I am still signed up. I assume I need to write Grant/Susan to know if I am still active on the original list for attending?

Any guidance is appreciated -

Regards,
Erik E.

Candubrain 3 May 2021 21:24

I haven't received a notice, but that doesn't mean its not coming. There is no date change on the HU website either.
brian

Grant Johnson 3 May 2021 23:08

Sorry for the delay on this. We are in the throes of moving house and I can’t even find my computer so this is done on my phone while I take a much needed short break.
Anyone registered or on the updates list should have received an email from David on this. If not, yes the venue has cancelled all events for this year so we are forced to as well.

Candubrain 4 May 2021 16:15

Its for the best, this just gives me something to look forward to in 2022.

Just an update for David....I did get a notice from him about 3 weeks ago, but nothing since about this cancellation.

fallingat120mph 4 May 2021 22:41

Thanks guys for responding.

I'll just need to verify I am still registered for 2022 (?) and by then hopefully the border will be open as it used to be.

Again, thanks!

Erik

NOTE: We always carry all event registrations forward if we have to cancel an event, (so far only due to COVID) unless you let us know you want to cancel / refund / transfer to another event. You don't need to do anything to carry forward, we take care of all that. We will also at some point before the next years event remind you!

Hello All

I'm spending extra days on the island and looking for suggested gravel roads or easy trails suitable for a R1200 GSA with street tires and a feeble rider.

Prior to the event I have planned some asphalt running around Corner Brook and Lark Harbour, but need suggestions for areas to ride post the HU event.

thanks
brian

Kritta11 22 Apr 2022 19:40

Hi Brian, I'm Krista, the Registration Crew Leader for HU Newfoundland 2022. Many of our trails here are more suited to ATV's and small dual-sports than large ADV bikes, but one gravel road I would recommend is the one that runs from the Burgeo Highway (Route 480) along Lloyd's River and the coast of Red Indian Lake. We rode it a few years ago on Vstroms and it was in great condition then. If you want more info (marked-up maps, etc), contact me by clicking on my name.
Safe travels and looking forward to meeting you!

Candubrain 23 Apr 2022 00:28

thank you Krista

Missrider 24 May 2022 14:00

This is wonderful news. I am seriously thinking of attending this meeting as I am a fan of HU, I've been to a few but my favorite was in South Africa. I am hoping other travelers from the US attend as these meetings are always a pleasure. I plan on trailering my new miniMoto as I will be taking a tiny little Honda Trail CT125 also known as the Hunter Cub. Sure I can ride it there but I want to stay a bit longer during this trip and use my roof tent on the van for accommodations to stay in other campgrounds on the island. The bike is very small and I have not carried camping gear on it, yet!! Newfoundland is very cold as I experienced before on the bike. Are there any other travelers attending from the US trailering their bike? I am riding from Massachusetts and trying to decide if I will take the northern longer route Trans-Labrador Highway or the Nova Scotia route via Maine.... Thank you in advance for any feedback. Administrators, if my post needs to be in another thread, please do not hesitate to move it. Thank you, Missrider.

Yes, there is an HU NL Facebook Group!

Also of course the HU NL Facebook Event page.

And most importantly the Event page itself for Presenter etc updates. If you have registered for the event OR added yourself to the Event Updates list, (NO need to do both, it all becomes one list) you will receive an occasional update as needed.

Re junk on the HU Group page - just not relevant to NL, or real junk? Please report anything that shouldn't be there - we have moderators around the world, but they can't catch everything, so as always we rely on you the reader to report any problem anywhere to do with HU. Thanks for helping out!

Couple general questions.

Considering traveling to event from U.S.. Some ground border crossing related questions. I see the Canadian Federal guidelines on CBC website have temporarily removed 72 hour requirement for PCR COVID test for vaccinated traveller. Last year, I remember provinces each had their own COVID guidelines. New Brunswick defaulted to Federal guidelines and Nova Scotia required had some registration like ArrivCan. No testing. Does entering Newfoundland from Nova Scotia ( New Sydney ) have specific app and testing requirement?

Atlantic Maritime Ferry question ( from North Sydney, Nova Scotia ) to Pro Aux Basque, NL. I see there are two sailing options per day. One around noon and other midnight ( 11:15 p.m. ). I guess if you take the noon ferry, you have to find a room somewhere in Port Aux Basque? To avoid moose crossings. If you take the midnight ferry from North Sydney, what the heck do you do waiting around all evening to catch ferry?

Thanks.

Kam
