California Yosemite Travellers Meeting - Sept. 25-28, 2014!
We have some great news! The excitement of being on the road with adventure travel is growing leaps and bounds, and we have busted out of the seams of our beautiful venue at Cambria. We will have wonderful memories of the last three years at Camp Ocean Pines, but it's time to move on to bigger and better.
Our new venue is the Mariposa fairgrounds just outside of Yosemite that boasts gorgeous rides from every direction, like the famed Tioga Pass. Flip Morton and Nicole Espinosa are co-coordinating HU14 with our help. All of us are thrilled to have plenty of presentation rooms, spacious landscaping for camping with choice of shade if desired, stadium space for demos, and a beer garden for socializing and late night HU fun. This year our charity of choice is fellow adventure traveller Ron Grace's Lost For a Reason that raises funds for families and children in need in the places we love to ride. Nicole will be MCing the charity raffle once again on the Saturday night, so stay tuned for the vendors who will be contributing a bountiful selection of adventure goodies. It's the closeness of our ever-growing adventure community that makes Horizons Unlimited what it is today, so please mark your calendars for September 25-28, 2014. Registration is now open with early bird rates at this link. www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/california Thank you all for making HU California such a success. We hope to see you there in 2014! All our best, Grant, Susan, Flip, and Nicole |
Registered, room booked, vacation covered, and ready to go! :)
|
We might just attend this one also...
We're planning to arrive in Hallifax Canada just after the HUBB UK event and start our Americas tour from there so we should be able to make it! We'll have a look at this, but I'm pretty confident we'll subscribe for this one and give again one hell of a presentation... :innocent: |
|
oh yay!
looking forward to seeing you there! :funmeteryes::scooter::clap::D

Hello from the north
Well! Hey Hey Hey! I am stoked, I am psyched and i am...... just...... me.
This will be so much fun..I have polished my presentations and the way I present myself (Not), and I hope I will be able to pass along my totally insane passion for riding.. It will not only be about riding in insane winter conditions but about our passion and also tricks on how to dress in winter Not many know how to efficiently. Sleeping in snow at -50 in the army teaches you a thing or two.. Normally I do not run out of things to say or write, but I am so excited that I am speechless. I will also have a couple copies of my books for riders to look at. And I will sell them 2 for 1, shipping included in the Continental USA and Canada for this special event. But I will take names and emails as well as addresses to do so. and ship them all when I get home.. I do not want to carry them in my bike. Looking forward to be there.. bier |
Ca. Meeting
Last year was my first time attending A HU meet. It was a fantastic experience. I even went all the way and was presenter for it.
I look forward to seeing everyone this yr. and again have signed on to present. What I experienced at their meet was a nice group of fellow riders who want to share their experiences and travel's. Not a lot of vendors but IMO that made it all the better . Sorry nothing against vendors ( we own Home) but it was the on the road stories I wanted to hear and compare to our own travels. See you in Sept. |
Registered!
Going from HUBB UK to HU CAN WEST to this one... will be an interesting time off from our RTW trip! :D |
Is there any option to attend on the Thursday only? Sadly I'll be wrapping up my ride in USA and flying out on the 26th :(
|
Registered and excited to see everyone again. It will be another great event!!!

Quick Question - Registration
I would not miss the CA HU meeting this year, but I will be coming off 4k mi.of southwest USA tour and I'm not sure of my arrival date, so can I register when I gets to Mariposa? (as opposed to on line?) Thanks!
|

Hey - thanks for the reply. I haven't planned a route yet. Do you have any ideas?

Leaving from Phoenix, AZ on Sat 9.20 to event
Hey guys! I'm on a black BMW R1100GS:thumbup:, and I'll be leaving from Phoenix this Saturday.
Probably stay the first night at the USA Hostel in LA, then ride 1 up the coast. Wing it, explore, just gotta make it to Yosemite by the 25th. I'll be camping all 3 nights at the event, might even stay Wednesday night onsite. Anyone along that route-ish want to meet up along the way somewhere, let me know! bier Not in a hurry, so I'll most likely take my time. Never been to Cali before, and I'm told the 1 is a beautiful ride. But I also love to ride fast, so any type of rider would be cool to team up with for a stretch :thumbup1: |
Rolling down I-40
Planning on heading over on Wed morning and stopping in Big Pine (or at least somewhere between Vegas and Big Pine). If you'll be heading through New Mexico around then and want to join up, let me know...
|
I'll be heading out of Santa Barbara early Wednesday morning. Probably spend Wednesday night at the event unless I stop off in the Sierras south of there. My only plan on getting there is to avoid I-5! Will be on the WR250 so no high speed runs for me.....
|
Is anyone heading over on Thursday from/through the Sacramento area by car/truck and have space for one other person/want some company. I injured my foot a few weeks back and am unable to ride till October sometime :oops2: This has put a temporary halt to our motorcycle trip to Argentina and we are currently being put up in Dixon about 23 miles West of Sacramento. Matt my other half and the amazing people who have put us up will be riding (me going pillion isn't an option) and I don't really fancy driving up there myself! Let me know if can help I will of course pitch in for gas :)

Group ride out to Mariposa?
Quote:
Is that your planned route? I'm a new, but fairly decent rider, on a Honda CB500X, and I would appreciate riding with some other folks for company and to be as conspicuous as possible. |
Hey Jimmy, yer' pullin his pud, right mate? beer
That's a very complex route for a NOOB rider to follow. You wanna get him killed? doh (not to mention some of the UGLIEST parts of California) We always AVOID the central valley, but to get to Mariposa, you have to ride across. Best to minimize your pain. Cross it quick and easy. I'd keep it much simpler and straight forward. Fewer turns, fewer course changes. Here's my idea: Head South out of the City on 280, take Pacifica turn off over to Highway One. Head South! Riders Pay to ride this route! Ride to Santa Cruz. Easy peasy. Gas up and get a bite in Santa Cruz, maybe take a ride past Steamer's Lane? Continue on Highway One South to Watsonville. Take highway 152 EAST. Follow 152 all the way to Chowchilla (another crap hole) Jump on Highway 99 at Chowchilla for a few miles, go NORTH to Merced. Exit and go EAST on highway 140 to Mariposa. Done. It ain't pretty but it's simple. Actually, the first part is beautiful as you pass through the Salinas Valley after Santa Cruz, the most fertile valley in the entire USA. It's quite beautiful in harvest season. Once further East it becomes corporate Agri, quite bleak, hot, dusty and polluted. Mariposa is slightly better. Safe riding! :thumbup1: and remember, if you're too conspicuous ... bleary, tired or drunk drivers ... MAY HEAD STRAIGHT AT YOU. It's called Target Fixation. A very real issue. Ask any CHP motor cop about this. Things like flashing headlights, super bright lights, bright colors ... all can be a source that triggers Target fixation. Use caution. :scooter: |
Just wanted to say thanks to Flip, Nicole, Grant, Susan and all the Volunteers for a Brilliant weekend. Hope to see many of you on the road to Tierra Del Fuego.

California 2014 is over :( but it was a fantastic event, great turnout, and even good weather - a very little bit of rain, but no one complained, the Californians were delighted to see it! Everyone loved the amazing new venue - flat ground, grass, loads of room and several excellent presentation rooms and facilities!
We had travellers from all over the USA, Canada, Malaysia, Iran, Switzerland, Belgium, England, Ireland, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, Netherlands, Sweden, and the Canary Islands! There was an incredible roster of presenters, running 5 presentations at once all day Saturday! So tons of great stuff to choose from, everything from the history of motorcycle design all the way through to modern streamlining and electric bikes to riding tips and tricks by Jimmy Lewis, riding Mongolia, South America, installing auxiliary lighting, electrics basics, tire changing, ergonomics, travel photography, how to hit the road, Alex Chacon's awesome The Modern Motorcycle Diaries, and waaay too many others to list here! If you weren't there you really missed out! Many thanks to the awesome Presenters, Alex Chacon, Ted Simon, Jimmy Lewis, Jeremy Kroeker (Canada), Carla King, Richard Battles, Billy Benedict, Wynne Benti, Jack, Sandy and Terry Borden, Roel Bremmers (Netherlands) and Azure O'Neill, Lori and Mark Ciszek (Canada), Peter Dean, Alison Delapp, Jonathan Ehly, Bill Ellison, Kurt Forget, Karen Fritz, Gaila Gutierrez, Tad Haas, Mike Kauffman, Steven Kirk (Australia), Kim and Seb Leeson (Canary Islands), Jason Len, Danell Lynn, Claudia and Mirko Nagler (Germany), Pete Nesbitt, Michelle Nilles, Carla Oliva, Ben Slavin, Erik Stephens, Anders and Petra Stridfeldt (Sweden), Ramey 'coach' Stroud, Robert Thode, Craig Vetter, and David and Heidi Winters. And of course a huge thanks to the Volunteers who made the event possible, Flip Morton, Craig Haggart, Bill Miner, Nicole Espinosa, Allen Barnes, and all the volunteers that helped out throughout the event. Put it on your calendar for next year, same location, and even more inspiration, information, and connection with travellers from all over the world! September 24-27 2015 See you there! |
HU Yosemite - Video
Had a wonderful time at my first HU event.
I put together this short video... |
Just wanted to let you guys all know that we had a GREAT weekend at Mariposa!
We just keep on running into our other friends on the road and the venue was terrific. Presentation rooms were really good and cozy, the arena is nice, camping good, nothing bad to say of this WE at all! We had great fun, met nice people and made some new friends, what more does one want?! :Beach: |

Had a good time
Great meeting other travelers and seeing how other do things and what they carry. Picture from on the way home.
And apparently not bringing a rain suite broke the drought, as it rained on the way there and on the way home. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7d24df87.jpg |
