Just found an extra week of vacation http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I wonder if it is possible to make Creel from Calgary and back in October in a week? Hmmm, time to do some research... ------------------ Ekke Kok '89 R100GS '03 R1150GS Adventure |
Don't miss an opportunity to print out a few posters that Grant has on the Creel page and take them to your local dealer's open house.
We did that today in Scottsdale and we even got Helge Pedersen to promote the event. He had some nice things to say about Grant and the HU site in general. |
I´m in
Grant:
Again I am in this year, I am making great publicity in all moto-clubs in town and around. If you send me the poster in Corel format I could translate it to spanish and maybe ad some attractive "mexican" text, then I could print it and post it at the clubs meetings. See ya Humberto |
Pre-event info for Creel!
See the thread here - a bunch of us will ride Festival Cultural Huachinera 2006 before heading to Creel. You do not want to miss this gathering!
See http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137846 |
The new facilities look nice.
Hopefully, I'll see some of you in Douglas, AZ for a nice ride into La Ruta de la Sierra Alta, and the rest of you I'll see in Creel. GP |
Huachinera Festival 2006
Quote:
Festival Cultural Huachinera 2006 Huachinera, in the Opata language means "Mesa de Huata Sagrada" (the mesa of the sacred cedar.) The municipality was founded by Juan Evangelista de Huachinera, in 1645 by Missionary Cristobal Garcia. The territory now outlined by the municipality was occupied in pre-Hispanic times by the Opata indians. http://www.huachinera.com/2005/images/opata_map.gif Located some 250 miles from the Douglas AZ, border, Huachinera is within a days ride and easy to access even for a quick weekend escapade... http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/69304253-M.jpg http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/69304268-M.jpg October 5th through the 8th, this extraordinarily friendly municipality holds a Cultural Festival, which includes all sorts of cool activities like; live music, a philarmonic orchestra, rondallas, fireworks, art exhibits, horsmen exhibits and shows, finger licking antojitos, and an endless supply of fine Mexican brew....Mas cerveza por favor! And guess what ? We're all invited !!! Friday October 6th, Gaspipe, k-7 and of course yours trully will be waiting at the Douglas / Agua Prieta border crossing, for any and all who is ready to live this unforgettable experience... We will be riding down the dirt route discovered 2 years ago by GP himself, which is suitable for small and big dualies alike, composed of mostly packed dirt with loose small rocks on top, including a short sandy section, this road can be safely navigated by skilled riders onboard big GS's or 950 Adv's as gracefully demonstrated by k-7 last year. Here are a few teasers as to what you'll encounter along this ride, as seen through LVR's, GP's and my camera lenses.... http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/41911630-M.jpg http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/41911664-M.jpg http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/41911642-M.jpg Last year Huachinera hosted a cabalcade of more than 2500 horsemen... http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/69304205-M.jpg En route to the HU Creel Meeting ? You'll be pleased to know that from Huachinera, you can head down to Creel on 3 different routes: Paved roads, mildly challenging dirt roads, and hard core dirt roads... There's an alternative for every type of bike and skill level. We can provide anyone who's interested with detailed route sheets, maps and GPS waypoints for all 3 routes, so all you have to do is simply pick one and go have the time of your life. Huachinera is 2-3 days from Creel, depending on which route you choose, and the speed at which you ride. I do wish to highlight the fact that this is NOT an organized ride.... we simply wish to share an open invitation by the amazingly gracious and hospitable folks from this town, who provided us with a uniquely warm welcome and an unforgettable experience last year. The municipal president and Jess Davila, http://www.jessdavila.com/site/552116/page/45029 shared with us during our visit, that these comunities are in serious jeopardy, in the sense that most of their young leave these towns and migrate either to the US or other major cities in Mexico, simply to find a job and make ends meet. We find this very moving and sad. So what can we do to help? Help them, by riding into town that weekend, and spending a few dollars in camping fees, great food and maybe a small souvenir to bring back home. This will have a direct impact on many wonderful Huachinera families. Jess Davila and Co. have assigned a specific parsel near the main plaza for all of us to camp, there will be rustic restroom and shower facilities, and the friendliest people around to take care of all our needs. Send either one of us (k-7, GP, Ibarra) a PM if you have any questions http://ibarra-bros.smugmug.com/photos/69304309-M.jpg __________________ |
Just saying....the new location looks excellent!

Looking for riders from Colorado
Fresh from the Leadville HU meeting I am looking forward to the warmth (??) of the one in Mexico. Hey, if we can have a good meeting in the Leadville rain, Creel sunshine will be great!http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ons/icon14.gif
I would like to test the waters for other riders leaving from Colorado on the Sat or Sunday before the meeting. I was thinking about taking 3 days to get there from Denver, 2 if we have an early start and a looong day the first day. The plan would be to split motel cost on the way, and to keep each other on the right track to Creel. Alternatively we can set up location and meeting times along the way (Santa Fe, Abuquerque, Las Cruces) for riders coming from other states, before crossing the border. Was thinking that if the planning starts early enough it will help keep all on track with time off work and off other vacation commitments. It happened to me last year ... BTW, how warm is it in Creel in October? RZ 1200 GSA |
Creel in October is PERFECT riding weather - not too hot and uncomfortable to wear proper protection, with crisp and cool nights - sometimes frost on the bikes in the morning.
I can't wait... :D See you there! |

Grant did you receive my E-mail regarding a sugestion for an onsite photo course? Humberto |
Photo course in Mexico
Yes - how many are interested in a half day photo course? Humberto would like to see my composition course extended to a half day, at a reasonable fee. I'm game - what about you? How much is fair? $40? What do you think?
We'll focus on composition of course, but also tips on shooting bikes on the move, and anything else that comes to mind. |
Grant:
Tomorrow nite I am doing a lecture of the 2006 HU Creel meeting for the Guadalajara BMW Club. I think that 5 people are at this time booked for the trip, plus the others that will get interested after the lecture. Also, my friends from Durango are going to go to the meeting they are five and the have 4 more guests that will attend the meeting, they are coming from El Salvador. Eduardo from Durango made a 2up trip to Patagonia with his wife and will like to do his presentation of the trip at the Creel Meeting, so he wants to know how much time he can use for it and if taking an USB memory with the presentation in Powerpoint will be enough or will he need to carry a computer? Think this year we will have much more people. See U Humberto :scooter: |
Humberto, good going!
Re Eduardo - yes, that would be excellent - he has 45 minutes MAXIMUM, and a USB memory stick with the presentation in PowerPoint is just fine. Computer definitely not necessary. Also please send me his full name and the title of his presentation - and whether he wants to do it in Spanish or English - or both! Did you get the poster translated? If so send it to me and I'll make it available on the meeting page too. I'd be very pleased to have more Mexicans at the meeting! :D thanks, Grant Quote:

Grant:
Title of presentation is "From Durango to Patagonia me and my wife on a GS" :thumbup1: I just sent you an e-mail with my sugested spanish text for poster. I could not fix the poster design. Is the hotel-site, now official? Can we make reservations yet? Yes, this year we will have more Mexicans there. Humberto |

More Room reservations
Grant:
I had a meeting with the guys from Durango and finally they know how much rooms they will need, for them and for the guys coming from El Salvador. It will be a total of 8 rooms. Four rooms for solo people And four rooms four 2 people each. People from Guadalajara are about to decide how many will go, so shortly I will send the reservations. Do we send a check? Or how do we deposit? Humberto |

Details in the mail. Everyone heading for Mexico - Cabins are going fast, so get your reservations in soon! It's well worth being at the new main meeting place, the cabins are a much better deal than last year! See you there, |
Gracias
Humberto,
Just taking a moment to thank Humberto for his exceptional efforts to promote and grow this year's meeting... Salud! Gerardo Ibarra. |
Gerardo:
Looks like one not to miss
This looks as though it could become a highlight of my AWT Americas section. Not only Copper Canyon but the fiesta in Huachinera as well:biggrin3:
Only trouble is I'm not 100% sure of my times, getting across Canada will take me about 60 days (not going the direct route :cool4: ) So I should arrive in Calgery from Inuvik in late August. Gotta see my cuz in Strollers M/cycles, Dallas, for a brew, sooo even taking a couple of weeks to learn some Spanish, looks like I can make it:thumbup1: See yuz in Huachinera or Copper Canyon. Presidio to Creel Crossing 10-10, questions for Grant
Looking for like minded couples / folks riding 2-up big dual sports from Presidio to Creel 10-10, and suggested parking in Presidio for truck and trailer. Leaving St. Louis on or about 10-8.
Grant: After three years trying my work schedule may actually permit attending HU Creel. Are there any 2 person cabins left? As well can you point to any GPS coordinates / highway GPS routes from Presidio to Creel via 16 etc.? My GPSXchange login refuses to work. Cheers! Steve |

ROAD CONDITIONS REPORT PLEASE READ
For those of you planning on slabing it through Chihuahua City, down through Cuahutemoc, La Junta, San Pedro, San Juanito, to Creel.... Major roadwork going on, as local public works force strives to turn this highway into a 4 lane deal. DO NOT ride at night. Mind the workers and heavy machinery. Watch out for gravel on a few sections Expect traffic delays and most importantly, drivers invading your lane. Remember this is Mexico, and everything goes. http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/deal.gif ALTERNATE ROUTES: If you are coming from the East (Presido-Ojinaga) Unfortuantely, there aren't many, bust out your atlas and you'll see what I mean, unless you want to hit the dirt. If so, soon after exiting Chihuahua city, you can hang a left towards Carichi, and cut across a dirt road, straight through Chomachi, Sisoguichi and on to Bocoyna, turn left on the pavement, and head down to Creel. If you are coming from the North (El Paso) or the West (Palomas, Douglas etc) Simply avoid heading towards Chihuahua, and come down through Nuevo Casas Grandes, Buenaventura, Gomez Farias, Temosachi, Guerrero, San Pedro, San Juanito on to Creel. Ride safe, see you all in Creel.http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/icon10.gif |
Quote:
The alternate dirt route you describe beginning west of Chihuahua sounds/looks interesting (better than getting stuck in construction). Anything a Mexican noob should know about traversing those kinds of roads? Are they well signed? Thanks! Also, anyone wanting to hook up for the ride from Presidio on or about Oct. 8/9 drop me a line at rpwhitby@mindspring.com:biggrin: |
Leaving from Davis, CA 10/4
Oops. I somehow managed to post this on a thread that's two years old. Here it is again, hopefully in the right place:
I'm leaving from Davis, CA on 10/4. Going to Douglas for the 10/7 crossing for the Huachinera fiesta and then on to Creel. I believe another fellow from Friday Harbor, WA will be coming along as well. email jerrykap@pacbell.net if this helps. I did the Copper Canyon HU meeting in `04 and had a blast. C-ya, Jerry |
Bike temp import permit
Does anyone know how much this would be for a '06 R1200 GSA? I am talking out of pocket, not the credit card guarantee.
Thanks |
slight change in plans...the border crossing facility at Naco doesn't open until 8:00 a.m., the bcf at Douglas/Agua Prieta is open 24/7 (I've been told you can take care of all the paper work at either crossing). We will be at the Douglas crossing at 7:30 a.m., Sunday 8th if anybody cares to join us. See ya in Creel !!!

Lodging Reservations??
Yes, I would be interested in the photo session, but I'm more concerned with figuring out how to make reservations for (1st choice) a private single room or cabin (shared if necessary).
|
Quote:
UPDATE ON RESERVATIONS FOR ALL As usual, things in Mexico don't go quite according to plan. :taz: It will be next week - Sept 27-ish - before we have the exact numbers of beds left available. Many rooms/beds are already filled, it's looking like we will have a lot of people coming down for the meeting! If you want a room, assume there are no private ones left. If you're ok to share, I believe there is no problem at this time. Send me an email via the feedback form: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/form/feedback.php and let me know the dates you want and if sharing is ok. First come first served. IF we fill up - don't worry, there are loads of beds available in Creel, you WILL have a bed. We will let all who reserved know their reservation is ok mid-next week or sooner. Note I'll be there a few days early, also several days after the meeting, so I can get a chance to go for a ride if anyone wants to join me for a ride :scooter: (after the meeting.) See you there! :D |
Woohoo!
Can't wait to see you all there!
|
Hi Gerry
Hi Gerry,
It's me, the guys with Honda ST1100 from san Jose, who shared room with you back in 2004. As you told me then, "You will be back again with the dual sports bike". I finally found a 1989 Honda TransAlp few months ago and it is getting ready for this meeting in couple of weeks. This time, I will have to continue on to the dirt-road where the pavement ends on the way to the Batopilas. See you soon! Taka Quote:

Leathermen tool considered a weapon
Mexican border crossing question.
Does anyone know if a Leathermen tool is considered a weapon, can one be carried when crossing the border? |

Insurance & Phone Cards
Bike & Medical Insurance.
Is it better to buy these insurances on-line before the trip or is it just as easy at the border? Is Sanborn a good company to use for insurance or is there a better one? Phone Card To call the US from Mexico is it better to buy a phone card in the US or in Mexico? Grant thanks for the reply on the Leathermen’s tool. |
Buy the insurance online, Sanborns is fine.
Sorry, dunno about the phone card - I'd guess a Mexican one - but I'm ONLY guessing! ! I'm trying to get a SIM card to fit my cell. |
Bit of a favour
Anyone who'll be at Creel - I need some gasket compound, something like Hylomar, and I've had no luck getting any here.
I'd be very grateful if one of you US chaps could bring a tube with you, for which, of course, I'll show m appreciation in the appropriate manner. Looking forward to meeting you all. C (RTW 2004-???? currently in Mexico) |
phone cards
You can get very good phone cards here in Mexico City called Andino they cost $100 for over 100 mins to the States or Europe. There are other options but I'm not sure how many mins you get. They may be difficult to get out of Mexico City.
|
Gasket
I'm coming up from Mexico City. I'll be leaving Thursday and should get there Sat or sun morning. I'm just pagking some ¨Black Silicone Hi Temp Sensor Safe Gasket Maker¨. I bought this stuff in Mexico some time ago and it still smells powerful enough to keep any liquid in or out of an engine. It's made by TF and should be easy enough to find almost anywhere. Hope this helps. See you on Sat. I'll be on a Black R1100Gs and probably camping until the wife arrives and says it's too bloody cold. See you then
Garry |
Gasket
Thanks Garry. I'm aiming to arrive on Saturday or Sunday - I'm in Guadalajara at the moment.
I need to do a lot of dismantling and rearrangement of gear and stuff, and, of course, leaks don't heal up but at least keep my boots waterproof. |
