10th Mini-Meeting to be Great Fun
For 10 years serious travelers on motorcycles, bicycles and overland 4 x 4s have been vectoring in to Chiang Mai for the January Mini-Meeting. It's a great opportunity to meet fellow travelers as well as expats located in SE Asia and knowledgeable about their part of the world.
Friday is a smooze, swill and chill evening, a "Welcome Party" sponsored by local expats and The newly remodeled Riders Corner. Saturday is the full Mini-Meeting. Both afternoons and evenings offer attendees a chance to tire kick in the parking lot out front where they can see the types of travel bikes and equipment travelers are using (or renting) as they wander through SE Asia. We look forward to seeing you there. Bring fellow travelers you meet along the way. |
Jerry and Thor plus Lynn and his wife plan on attending. Everyone we've attended has been a blast. See you there.

Travel and Adventure Presentations
Adventurer, Author and Global Motorcycle Entertainer, Geoff Thomas from GB, has volunteered to be one of the two entertainers on Saturday night.
Thomas always has a wild and interesting presentation. Once he shared his tale of managing 1,000 kilometers in 24 hours on a Thai manufactured 125 cc Tiger motorcycle, his personal form of an Ironbutt 1,000 in 24 hours. His adventure included two flat tires, the second being caused by the first Thai tire changer leaving an adjusting bolt inside the tire between the tube and the tire after making the patch fix. Given the slow speed of the Tiger and other road traffic adventures along the way it was an amazing feat to do the 1,000 kilometers from the HU Meeting in Chiang Mai to his end point in Bangkok in less than 24 hours. One (1) opening remains for a presenter on Saturday night. If anyone passing through or attending the Meeting has an interesting topic the 45 minute slot remains open. Insiders at The Rider's Corner Restaurant have reminded attendees that since they expanded their restaurant space to include the former motorcycle sales shop next door, they now have far more space and new video screens in the expanded space. The weekend looks to be another wild and adventurous exchange for serious and interested motorcycle travellers in SE Asia. |
When Sun Chaser says ‘Volunteered’, what he really means is that he got me drunk on reasonably priced beer and took advantage of my relaxed state of mind. At this moment in time I don’t know what trash I’ll be talking about on Saturday evening, but I’ll try and make it as entertaining as I can. Looking forward to meeting friends, old and new, and enjoying the amazing hospitality of Philip, Som and the Team at Riders Corner.

Mini-Meeting
No formal sign-up required, although it lets the restaurant know how to space seating, etc. For the BBQ on Saturday night a reservation should be made at the tele. numbers in the first post (above).
This is a "Mini" meeting, so Friday is drop in, have a free beer (for the one designated hour) on the house and local supporters, see who is in town, trade tall tales and schmooze until closing. Saturday is the official gathering starting with the BBQ. Both nights the restaurant is generally filled with travelers and locals interested in over landing in SE Asia, or around the world. Show up early for a good seat, stay late for the biggest tall tales (like "I was the first to cross Myanmar on a 'big bike' wearing a speedo," or "My _______ motorbike has given me no problems at all," or.....) It's always a fun two evenings and the location has long been a touch point for bamboo news in the Golden Triangle and SE Asia for travelers. |
Arrived this evening. A few days early.....Picking up bikes tomorrow and am going to do some local rides to get used to riding on the 'wrong' side of the street. Currently enjoying some awesome curry and dark Lao beer. See you all on Friday!!

Good bash :thumbup1: |
Enjoyed a really good weekend at the HU meeting at Riders Corner in Chiang Mai. Met some great people living in and travelling through Thailand and wish I could have stayed longer (Love the place). However, I got contact details for Jules, a young Australian riding a Keeway from Malaysia to Turkey, but as I tend to do, I lost them. If anybody knows his name on HU, or other meida, that would be great.
Many thanks to Phillip and Som and all those who helped at the event. Geoff bier |
Thanks to all those who participated in the Thailand 2016 Travelers Mini-Meeting!
And especially thanks to Phil and Oz and the rest who made it all happen, and of course Dr. Gregory Frazier, "the instigator" who though he wasn't there - he was off riding in South America of all places instead of in Thailand! :) Here's a few photos in from the Thailand Meeting! Just in from Oz, a report on the event!
Horizons Unlimited Mini Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, January 8 - 9 2016 It was a beautiful weekend in Chiang Mai and while the evening air was cool the camaraderie between fellow adventure riders was as warm as I've ever seen. Over 30 riders, along with a great number of local travel enthusiasts, made their way to the Riders Corner, restaurant, bar and guest house to share tales of their rides while looking for information about new adventures and enjoying the good food and beverages available. For all who gathered at the 10th annual HU Mini Meeting in Chiang Mai, the evening began with a surprise performance of Thai style dancing given by two of the cutest little girls, Allysala (Phil & Som's daughter) and her friend Phrao, made up in the traditional Lana attire of Northern Thailand. A welcome complement to the sumptuous barbecue we had all just consumed and a confirmation of how enjoyable our hosts have made these gatherings for many years. Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves when the mic was passed, and while the beer may have helped, no one was shy. Just about every point on the compass was covered, with a good mix of local riders having varied experiences in the jungles of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, along with our volunteer photographer, Glenn Phuah and his partner wrapping up their tour out of Singapore. We had riders from as far away as America, Australia, Finland, England, Germany, Russia and points in between. HU Members, Dee & Pete were on their first Asian Motorcycle adventure from the Western U.S., state of Washington and the HU Mini Meeting in Chiang Mai was central to their plans. Two audio-visual presentations were given along with a brief talk about how one man, Ernie from America, found a way to give something back to the less fortunate he had seen on one of his journeys. He was able to obtain a prosthetic arm, donated by an athlete in the States whose replacement was sponsored and bring it to Asia for a boy who could not afford to replace the one he lost. An epiphany he had after meeting and speaking with the donor about the boy he had met on a ride in Cambodia. You may have read about our first presenter, Geoff Thomas on the HU site. His stories, after literally getting burned out of his home in England and travelling the world since, have made him a crowd favorite in past years. Geoff now spends much of his winters in Thailand with summers spent riding the woods of Northern California out of Boonville, a place where they make their own beer and speak their own language. Sounds like a good plan to me and I've experienced both. His presentation for this meeting focused on a ride he took across Russia, not surprisingly with meal stops at diners that became brothels by night and strangers who kept showing up at his remote campsites with vodka. It was a good presentation; the ride reports and road conditions were well represented along with some great photographs. Our second presentation was given by Lynn Brown about his time riding the back roads of Laos. He gave a history laced 'show and tell' about a ride from Vientiane to Long Tieng. Once known as "The Most Secret Place on Earth", it was operated by the CIA during the Vietnam War with a secret airstrip known as Lima 98, a chaotic place during the war that’s now just a relic of itself and the history it holds. Having gone from a remote, sparsely populated valley to a bustling city by 1964, it became one of the largest US military installations on foreign soil with CIA spooks, mercenaries and Hmong fighters recruited from the local population. It was abandoned near the end of the war after the Vietnamese made it a difficult place to stay when they began assaulting it around 1971. It represents an interesting part of the history of Laos and the secret war they hosted while not being an "official" party to the US led conflict. Lynn also included his travels through the nearby "Plain of Jars", one of the most sought after rides for those brave enough to risk an explosive or two left over from the war. According to Wikipedia, the U.S. Air Force dropped more bombs on Laos, primarily the Plain of Jars, than it dropped during the whole of World War II. This included 262 million anti-personnel cluster bombs. An estimated 80 million of those did not explode and remain a deadly threat to the population. ### Thanks Oz for the report and your own efforts to make a great event! |
Undecided at this time, we'll post it as soon as we know!
