10TH Lumb Farm Ripley Meeting 2010

The 10th Horizons Unlimited Meeting, Lumb Farm, Ripley, Derbyshire, UK

Its once again taking place over the weekend of 24 - 27th June 2010, Thursday to Sunday. A week later than last year.
Costs are £30.00 for the whole weekend, if you register AND pay before the end of December 2009. £50.00 if you leave it too late! Registration is open now and we already have over 100 folk registered and paid.
This includes 3 nights camping and entrance to all the presentations and demonstrations. You don't have to camp, though there is no reduction in the price, a list of nearby accommadation can be found on the website/google.

We are now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a show, it can be on any bike related travelling topic. Last year we had our most diverse range of topics ever, with some fantastic shows and knowledgable talks.
To help planning the event we need your application forms in early, before Friday 30th April 2010.
Over the weekend we have around 40 presenters putting on over 50 shows! Check out the range of topics here
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings/UK2010.php

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had an excellent crew last year doing a range of activities - gate - registration - I.T. - recycling etc, this year we'll need some folk with some cooking skills too, to help out with Dannys 'Roadkill Demonstation'
It takes over 60 volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. Sam Manicom (full time author and journo) organises the volunteers and can be contacted here if you feel you can help out in any way.
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings/volunteers/

We'd like to continue offering the rideouts this year. We have no problem in filling up the spaces but always struggle to find rideout leaders. If you can help in any way or know someone who wants to lead one please get in touch with me via the website and I'll explain all.

More details here,

or click on the left hand side under Events for other meetings around the world.

Questions Anyone?

See you soon

ktmmark, you're not alone! Registrations are coming in fast!

We have about 50 presentations/tech seminars booked already, lots of new ones, and lots of old favourites too.

The whole Meeting Team has been working hard on improvements, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the upgrades and improvements, from more toilets to EARLY opening showers (7am) and another room to hang out in, more vendors, and more room for camping.

You'll also be able to see what's going on MUCH better in the tyre changing demo!

If you haven't registered yet, get in and get it done, you don't want to miss the 10th Anniversary Event!

See you there! :thumbup1:

Hi All,
Brilliant!!!! It's all coming together beautifully. I can't wait for us to get to the 24th of June. What an excellent range of presentations and the number of adventure travel companies coming along is terrific.

As for the volunteers, I'm delighted that so many people have put their names forward to help out. At this time last year we were still 23 people short of the total 65 volunteers we needed. This year we are just 7 people short. Fantastic!! But if you haven't put your name down to help yet, and feel like mucking in for a few hours, please do get in touch with me. Oh and, you know, a much larger than normal percentage of people who have volunteered to help to date, have never been before. I think that's b****y good stuff. Thanks all!

We still need 2 people to help with the Digi Tech side of things. This role is vital as many of the presenters are standing on a stage for the first time.:confused1: When the tech side of things runs smoothly then their job is just that much less nerve wracking. So, if you know your way around PCs, digital projectors, powerpoint and the like, I'd really like to hear from you. This is a great job as you get to watch loads of the presentations from one of the best seats in the house.

We are short of 2 people for the Gate Crew. We have all been to a rally somewhere for the first time, where we knew no one and didn't know where anything was. The Gate Crew's job is to make every person arriving :welcome:and to help them settle in to a great weekend. One of the best things about this job is that its a brilliant way to meet people. There's no rocket science involved. But the ability to smile, and mean it, :biggrin3: is vital.

We are short of someone to help out with the recycling. We are making a real effort to get this right this year. And so we should!:thumbup1: So far we have a crew of three people lined up but one more would make this crew complete.

And finally, we could do with some volunteers to muck in with general setting up on Thursday morning. So, if you are getting there early and feel like helping with laying out chairs, hanging some posters or popping into town for that oh so important piece of equipment that's needed at the last minute, then please get in touch. :D

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings/volunteers/

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks. Many thanks again to everyone who has already voluntered to help.
Cheers for now,
Sam

Horizons UK 2010 Meeting is closed for registrations!

Update - as of Friday, registration is closed! We are full! We've had a record number of registrations. This will be the largest event of its kind in the world!

We also have a record number of presentations this year, 86 over the Thurs-Sun, so three presentation rooms will be going non-stop, with repeats of popular presentations!

In case you're worried it will be too crowded, we've made arrangements to accommodate more people, including streaming the evening presentations in the main room to a very large (16 x 16 meter) marquee in the parking lot with a full outdoor 5 meter screen plus sound system and 160 chairs. This will allow the folks who don't fit into the main room to enjoy the presentations outside but under cover!

There will also be lots more toilets, Angela has promised 7 a.m. access to showers and more staff in the pub/restaurant.

The most up to date schedule of presentations will be available at the event when you register, but the almost-final schedule is on the page now if you want to download and print it for your planning ;-)

It's going to be awesome! See you all there! :D

Glynn Roberts 24 Jun 2010 14:50

Its filling up today.... Peter and Kay Forwood thundered in last night, Ted Simon arrived California via London and Derby today, Travel Dri, Adventure Spec, Wildcat Adventures, are all up and open for business.

Danny's got his his fire light and the big marquee is open!

Plus of course the 200 folk that are already on site from as far away as Belguim (so far)

Don't shoot me down in flames but hasn't this meeting got a bit too popular and in danger of losing its original appeal?
Only an observation and I stand ready to be told that I'm so wrong and I'm talking rubbish

Absolutely brilliant! And such fantastic weather. Sounds like its going to be the best HU Meet ever. Gutted I can't be there. Really sad that I'm missing out on this chance to meet up with friends of the road. The HU Meet is still the only place where I know that I am surrounded by like minded people. :clap:Love that. Hope everyone has an excellent time. I'm already looking forward to next years Meet :mchappy:

Hi Sam
Hope your recovery is going well. See you later this year hopefully. Has Grant sorted the Autumn meet?
cheers

Sam Manicom 27 Jun 2010 13:25

Hi BDG and Chris,
Hope you still made it BDG. I was really looking forward to being there and to catching up with you guys, but I've a great excuse for not making it. I've been tussling with a pretty severe kidney problem for the last couple of years but I had an amazing stroke of luck at the start of June. I really didn't think I was going to be this lucky but a potential match on the transplant list came up for me and the match was good enough for the transplant to go ahead. I still can't believe its happened. I was destined to quite a few years of problems. People on the organ donor list are just the best!

If I can make it through the next few months without it rejecting then I'm really winning. The launch of my new book on the 18th of September at the Ace Cafe is going to be my first day of freedom. Until that time, because the anti rejection drugs knock the immune system, I'm going to be a bit of a hermit. No worries, lots to do and a great reason to be this way. Really missed being at the Meet though. It sounds as if everyone had a brilliant time. Good stuff. Grant, Susan, Glynn and all the volunteers did a fantastic job I hear.

Anyway, hope you did make it. Catch you guys soon.
Cheers,
Sam

Great meeting as usual

As usual, a fantastic meet- minus the rain! Great people, presentations and fun. Just one thing- to those people who felt the neet to ride like twats through the camping field and start their bikes outside peoples tents at six a.m., don't come next year!
P.S. Standing on the pegs whilst riding through a dry field in Derbyshire is not really necessary- you know who you are!

holodragon 28 Jun 2010 09:48

Thanks Grant/Susan/Glyn etc,had a great time,my first HU meet & I really enjoyed it,lots of nice people some great talks/shows & I learnt quite a bit, hope to be back next year.

Thanks

Just wanted to add my thanks to absolutely everyone involved in organising the weekend, making the presentations and to all those who I met for a chat and/or beer.

This was my first time at Ripley and it is now a guaranteed annual event in my diary unless I have already acted upon the huge dose of inspiration and have disappeared off over the horizon on my VStrom.

Am now sitting at work and can echo Austin's words on Saturday night that there is just no point trying to explain to people what I did at the weekend, they just wont get it. Cant help telling them how to cook a Squirrel though!

Adrian

dave ett 28 Jun 2010 12:02

Had a good weekend popping my meeting cherry too. Spent much of the three days indoors listening to various presentations, my personal favourite being Paddy Tyson. A funny man - can't wait to read the book.

Thanks to all those I chatted to, especially Metal Mule who seemed a little sad to see one of his babies in such a state when I took my battered (but still working) case for him to see - I've now adjusted / repaired them as advised!

Sue and Grant continue to inspire, and the biker doctor was great.

Good luck to the CB500 guys and their cage panniers!

hondated 28 Jun 2010 12:06

Well where....

do I begin.Having booked last year and feeling wacked from having been to the TT ( I know, I know, hardly around the world is it, just put it down to an age thing ) and so did not go I was determined to get there this year. And so friday morning up early bike packed literally about to set off and the phone rings. Unbelievably one of my mates needed to speak to me about a relationship problem he had with his partner of 35 years and asked whether he caould pop around. Well what are you going to say !.So he comes around and we chat for a couple of hours and because him and his partner were going off to Devon for a week and she did now want to go I volunteer for us to have a boys week end instead in Devon. He of cause knew nothing about this trip but I just saw it giving him an opportunity to ease his pain over the week end. Well thankfully he left me feeling a bit happier and about an hour later I received a phone call thanking me for my help and also telling me that they were off to Devon and would talk through their problems. So with a big sigh I put the phone down and having thought I would not make it again I set off for Ripley.

M1 the quickest route was diabolical but after a little detour and a stop to ask directions I arrived.

My first impression was good because those on reception were both informative and friendly and I found my spot and set up my tent.

What a disaster that was because the elastics that hold the frame together were broken and I would get one side up and the other side would crumble. Thankfully a couple of fellas passing by gave me some assistance and although not very elegant I had shelter for the night. Some other lads having a drink and a laugh who I met just before I come away said they did not like to offer to help because they thought I might think they were taking the mickey so it seems at least I gave them a laugh.

I made friends with a really nicely spoken fella Tim in the tent next to me and during the week end it was great to have a bit of banter with him.If you met Tim like me you would have assumed he was part of the aristocracy because of the way he speaks but what a great down to earth guy and his life experiences were not of someone born to a priviliged back ground. Great bloke. I could go on and on and on about there presentations but all I will say is that everyone I went to were interesting and inspirational. The most hiarious for me was of cause Austin and Lois last one. What a great couple and I am really looking forward to reading both of their books.

Being a chatty fella I was really at the right place for once because everyone I met were only too willing to stand and chat.I hope the couple that I met that own a gardening company achieve all that they want to when it comes to travelling because they were a great couple to meet.I could mention many other peole but I won't but all I will say is that I hope we all meet up again next year.

To sum up it was a brilliant week end and it did not matter whether you was riding a GS or a Blackbird because just being a biker was enough.

I finally just want to say thank you to Grant and Susan and all of the helpers for giving me a great week end for a more than reasonable cost.
Will I be there next year you bet I will but I would also like to travel to one of their other meets in another country some time as well.

Oh yes and can someone tell me the name of the lady that was from Tasmania and who is travelling around the world because I would like to read her blog and I have lost the card that she gave to me.

See you all next year and I am already counting the days till the next one.

Many Thanks.

Thank you to everyone who donated to Grant and Susan's weekend break present and sorry that I didn't manage to get to everyone. Both were very happy to be so thanked themselves and admitted to having had a hectic schedule for last few years, so Sam Manicom's idea of a bed and breakfast break is just right. The dates will be agreed later but wait....11 years around the world and they've yet to visit Scotland. I don't know what that shows but I'm eager to hear how they like it. The dreaded Highland Midges will be sharpening their teeth in anticipation.
I'm am very glad I decided to visit Ripley. Wow, what HU can offer in so many ways, not to mention the crew at the Lumb Farm. Now to treat the sun burn. Still smarting from losing the Most Unsuitable Bike prize....to a Panther. The best bike won. Ciao, Lindsay.

Grant Johnson 28 Jun 2010 18:16

The 10th Anniversary HU UK 2010 Travellers Meeting had a record turnout, but a lot of tweaks to the setup, including a huge marquee, meant that it all went smoothly and never felt crowded. Over 80 presentations were given over the 4 days - the biggest problem was figuring out your schedule with three rooms going from 10am to 11pm, plus the marquee!

A huge thanks to all the presenters for their efforts - I heard nothing but great reviews on all the presentations. To the 81 volunteers who took on a huge range of tasks, including greeting everyone at the gate, registration desk, peeling potatoes and washing dishes at Danny's Road Kill Cookout, charity raffle collection, keeping the presentations tech stuff running smoothly, helping with setup, picking up the trash and recycling all that was possible, and much much more - we couldn't have done it without you - thanks VERY much - especially those who had never been to an HU Meeting before and had no idea what they were getting into! :)

And to all those who came, thanks - we hope you enjoyed it, and feel free to send us any comments via the Feedback form, http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/feedback

We'll also be sending out an email, you can reply to that with your comments - we're always trying to improve, and we appreciate your help.

Send me your photos or better post them on this thread! :)

See you all next year!
OR at one of the other HU Meetings around the world.

Hi folks - thanks for your thoughts. Is no problem and it is often true that being blind people are a little unsure of the lay of the land! No worries - as our Australian cousins are fond of saying. It was good to wander around and have bernard buy every book in sight, along with a picture of The Ted (as he has called him for time ever after).

Was a good break and loved listening to people talking about their trips - it stirred a lot of memories..............

Thanks again and you never know, we may well meet up in the future.

Best wishes

Thank you!!!

What a brilliant weekend - I'm still brimming with amazement, enthusiasm and inspiration from my first ever HU Meeting!

Thanks to everybody involved in the planning, organisation and running of this fantastic event – the presenters, the volunteers, the technicians and the wonderful people at Lumb Farm.

Special thanks go to -

* Berin and Dr JM who made my attendance possible in the first place; after breaking my foot I thought I had to cancel but Berin offered me his pillion seat and Dr JM later sacrificied her bike ride and took me up to Ripley in a more sensible vehicle.

* Susan Johnson and Glynn Roberts for reserving a ‘disabled spot’ for me.

* Danny’s Roadkill Cookout Crew for feeding me nettle soup and wild trout when the kitchen ran out of supplies on Saturday night.

* Everyone who made this weekend so special by just being friendly and helpful and making my hopping around on crutches as easy as possible – thank you all.

Hi Pumpy,

Team Serow sure enjoyed themselves this year, with good food from the Cobb Cooker

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0528.jpg

and from the constantly running frying pan

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0471.jpg

So much so that Doc's shorts gave up the battle!

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0457.jpg

My own machine (Team Cabra) handled the load well

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0427.jpg

yet took a rest to help with the 'pick up a bike' lessons

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0612.jpg

And many people were impressed with the stuff we carried on the Serows!

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0512.jpg

Many innocent passers by were dragged into the celebrations

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0514.jpg

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0551.jpg

After all, 7 Serow's really is a flock

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0569.jpg

Some people happily tried out Team Cabra's riding position, including Pumpy on crutches!

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0574.jpg

And Jane

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0554.jpg

And who was the 13th lady to take a seat on my little Brazlian? Well it had to be Lois!

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0641.jpg

She rode off on the bike, only for Team Cabra to return with Austin in control.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...g/IMG_0642.jpg

Thanks to all concerned, it was an amazing event.

Regards

Reggie

Reggie,

Great report and photos (also on the Serow Forum) but where are the pics of the other ten ladies you lured into sitting on Team Cabra? http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/naughty.gif

Can't reply to your pm, as I haven't contributed enough to the HU yet, but you can lift any of my images straight from the post:

* right-click on the photo
* then on Properties
* copy and paste the URL in between the [IMG] tags in your own post or use the 'Insert Image' http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...nsertimage.gif button.

You can also go to my Smugmug gallery - there you can choose from different photo sizes - and follow the same procedure.

P.S. Standing on the pegs whilst riding through a dry field in Derbyshire is not really necessary- you know who you are!

I echo all the good comments about the meet. Fantastic organization to make sure we all had a great weekend. It's my second and it was the same weather back in 2006.
Good to meet you Leigh and D. It's always a bonus to have pleasant neighbours when camping. Hope to see you again next year when hopefully I won't be on my own.

Hi Martin,

sorry dude, I wasn't watching, just saw some of the front end off earlier and the rear wheel off! Our mate with his DL1000 was well impressed with the KTM's and I reckon he'll be swapping for one soon!

I had a wonderfull event - great weather talks and people.

However for the third year running the bottom field had raw sewerage coming up! again and the stink was so bad. Many people had to pack up and move tents and it spoilt enjoyment of sitting chatting eating and drinking by our tents. I have camped for three years and its always been bad - but this year took the prize . I told the farm owners and they came out and said 'it ill be ok!!' and put tape around the area. I don't think it would be ok with risk of coming into contact with sewerage!?

Please can someone ask Lumb farm to sort it out.

Apart from that - it was a wonderful weekend.

I'm sorry to moan (i haven't moaned the last two years) but it was rotton having to see and smell that. I can't tell you how nasty it was to camp in the bottom feild if the wind was in your direction!

I camped in the bottom field Fri and Sat night and smelt nothing. Maybe I was upwind (I definitely was up hill). Could I suggest that in 2011 you remember the 3 smelly years and use one of the other areas :smartass:.

Had a great meet. See you all next year. Or even this year if the Autumn meet actually happens... :innocent:

PatHorne 30 Jun 2010 14:16

I wondered who would be first to suggest that Chris...

The reason we camp in teh botton feild is because our gang do talks and need to be near to the cars to get all the stuff they need to entertain you all x

grizzly7 30 Jun 2010 14:27

Thankyou too from one of the few with 4 wheels! Me and my lovely ladies 1st meet, and won't be the last! Professional and amateur all at the same time, if you know what I mean! We learnt so much from all the informative talks, and even more from being able to chat to so many who have done so much!

What an opportunity and inspiration.

Although we offered to help at one point we were told no-one was needed, so thankyou to all who did, especially those unpaid but who essentially worked full time ALL weekend! :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

BDG 30 Jun 2010 16:05

Hi Sam,

Oh yes I definately made it, better late than never and as always had a great time. IMHO it's the best bike meet of the year.

I'm so glad you had such luck with a donor and will well and truly keep my fingers crossed for you. Good luck mate and I look forward to reading the new book.

You take care and all the best.

Cheers

Shaun.

Cheers,
Sam

Amazing Weekend

Just echoing what everyone else had to say as well about what a great time it was. I'm only just getting to the PC now to send my comments as I have finished work- hooray:funmeteryes:, I've got the next two days to get everything ready then I'm flying to LA at the weekend to collect Thelma (from other HU stalwarts) and I'll be riding around North America, because in theory I'm still on my home from last year's trip.

It was so good catching up with everyone, finally getting to meet Peter and Kay (after a couple of near-misses on other continents) and just chatting to all and sundry. Thanks for posting the hpotos that capture the weekend so well and Fil- don'tforget the ice cream van next year!
Many thanks to Reggie for lending Team Cabra (his brand new Serrow) for the bike picking up workshop and many thanks to the nameless guy :Dwho volunteered to lay the bike down on the ground after each successful attempt, he was very patient with us all.

I look forward to fitting in a HU meet in the States later this year and then hopefully will be back at Ripley again next year.
See you on the road somewhere...

Good Times

It was our 4th meeting and I'd say it was the best yet.

A big thanks to Grant, Susan, Glynn and all the volunteers and staff at Lumb Farm for making it happen.

Good to see some familiar faces and meet some new folks too. Hello Rob & Helen, and Richard, who had a Harley, now on a GS.

Such a shame Sam Manicom couldn't be there, hope the recovery is going well, Sam, We'll see you at the Ace in September, can't wait for the new book..!

wHAT !

I think you need to get out more, or try the Isle of Man TT !

I am someone that has tried many many times and went last year and when the racing is not interrupted by the weather yes its great. You also cannot see any better racing than bike racing on public roads but even though I get cheap accommodation the ferry cost of £220 is too prohibitive.
Its no I.O.M for me again next year but definitely HU meet and perhaps one further afield some time.Blimey it must have been good because I am even thinking about flogging the Blackbird and getting an Adventure bike.

BillyBobski 2 Jul 2010 17:18

Hi all, just signed up to say what a great event this was, I really enjoyed it and hope to hit a few more in the future. There were only two problems that I can complain about, one already mentioned..

a) The sewage. It was on the very spot I'd chosen to put up my floorless tent on arrival, but luckily my mates parked their bikes there just to annoy me so I had to go a few yards to the right. Only for that I'd have been waking up literally in the sh#t, as there was no indication of the problem on the first day and it appeared overnight, so I would not have been a happy camper at all. As it was I just moved uphill a bit before it flooded me but the stink was still very unpleasant.

b) The sun. Get rid of it, more :rain: please ! As a west coast of Ireland Paddy I can't be having it :tongue3:

Grant Johnson 2 Jul 2010 21:35

Forgot to post the:

Tyre Changing Competition Results:

This was a tough challenge - on and off, a stiff old sports bike tyre, a wide tubeless rim, and only short tyre levers and a bit of soap to do it with. Competitors were dripping with sweat after struggling with the rock hard tyre!

Winner of a Horizons Unlimited £50 gift certificate (redeemable at the TravelDri booth): Ciaran McFerran, in 5:39.

Second Place, a £20 gift certificate redeemable at the TravelDri booth: Richard Tibbets, in 6:32.

Other competitors were Bram Dumolin in third, and Dermot Moriarty in fourth.

Think you could do it faster? See you next year then! :innocent:

Bike SHOW!

New for this year, the first HU Travel Bike Show!
There was a VERY interesting collection of bikes on display, so a great success, and we'll be doing it again next year.

Most Stickered - Winner: Peter and Kay Forwood's Harley-Davidson

Sorry about the sewage :oops2: it's been mentioned several times, and we're on it! Seems to be an overload problem - we're their biggest event.

Sun - you just picked a bad year, usually we manage to make the Irish quite happy! :rain:

Great to hear everyone had a good time, we were worried in the days before that something major would go wrong - and some did - but we were lucky and with a lot of help got them all sorted in time.

Just have to say this was my first meeting, i'm normally a loner and don't like bike meets but this was excellent. Everybody was friendly and its nice to meet people who have done what i dream of doing. Paul i would never have guessed that that was your first presentation it was brilliant very natural and funny. The staff at Lumb Farm were always willing to help even though they were run off their feet at times. Can't wait till next year, i might even try and get to Ireland for that meeting. Thanks again to Grant and Susan and all the volunteers and back up team you should be proud of yourselves.:thumbup1:

Let me chime in and say a big "thank you" to the organisers, presenters and attendees who made this a lovely event. This was my 2nd meeting and the first time I presented, which was wicked.

Having a "movie night" on Saturday after all events were done was a great idea and we thoroughly enjoyed On Any Sunday - excellent stuff!

For people who attended my presentation of "UK2India - a 5 month journey" I would like to thank you for your warm feedback and invite you to PM me with anything you might like help with.

Cheers

Alex

PS: I'd also like to help the kind gentleman who did my IT support for the presentation (was it Nigel in Asia room, Saturday 21:00?) - I never got to officially thank you!

Enjoy your journey home - good to see you again if all too briefly as ever.

A big thanks to all for a great event.

Special thanks to Daniel and his delightful family for really getting into the spirit of the event and for their refreshing company and invaluable assistance down at Roadkill HQ. It was great to have you there and I hope we'll have the pleasure again next year.

Another big thanks to Si who also played a big part in making sure Danny didn't end up doing all the work this year and who was also head chef in charge of the game stew.

On a personal note, I didn't do half as much this year as I had hoped due to life getting in the way - but next year there are some plans for some new demonstrations at the Roadkill. Some were due this year and didn't happen (sorry) and others might come courtesy of a new found volunteer who shall remain nameless for now (just in case he can't make it next year!) - but you know who you are, and thanks for showing me cordage techniques with nettles ;)

Oh, and there will be ice cream...

Sam Manicom 6 Jul 2010 12:27

The postman rang the doorbell yesterday - 'Sam I have a parcel for you.' And so he did.

Grant and Susan have very kindly forwarded a goodie box on to Birgs and I. Inside were a T-shirt each for us, an HU Cap, a copy of Simon Roberts brilliant new book 'Tea with Bin Laden's Brother' and a huge card.

The get well card has been signed by so many people that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Thank you very much to everyone who has signed the card, for your best wishes, and also to everyone who has phoned or emailed to wish us well, and to say what a brilliant time they had at HU 2010 Ripley. I'm delighted it went off so well.

A lot of that is down to all the people who volunteered to help out. We had an amazing crew again this year and you guys do so much to make the Meet run smoothly. You guys do so much to set the mood and atmosphere of the Meet. Thank you all!

See you next year I hope, if not before.
Cheers,

HU Support for Motorcycle Outreach

Dear all,

I write to say that Barbara and I have now counted up the donations to Motorcycle Outreach from the Travellers Meeting at Lumb Farm and they total £877.12. Together with the £506 from the Enniskillen rally, that makes a grand total of £1,383.12.

On behalf of the Trustees and Directors of Motorcycle Outreach, we’d like to pass on our thanks to all those at both meetings who bought raffle tickets and stickers and helped us raise that impressive amount for Motorcycle Outreach.

We are very grateful for every donation that we receive; because we work directly with local health services, even a little goes a very long way with us, quite literally! £10 will cover the cost of ten healthcare visits by motorcycle to remote villages on the island of Flores in Indonesia, and in each village up to 1,000 people will thus have access to healthcare, medical advice and health education which they would otherwise be denied, due to the difficulty in reaching the remote locations by any other method than by motorcycle.

Anyone wanting to see where the money is spent need only click on http://www.motorcycleoutreach.org/Testimonials.html where there are several stories dictated directly by grateful people who have been helped by Health for All, the project that we support on Flores. Health for All ensure that a small fleet of motorcycles are maintained and made available for use by local doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers to enable them to get to outlying villages beyond the reach of other means of transport.

And really it is on behalf of those people, in Flores, that we write to thank Horizons Unlimited for your continuing support of Motorcycle Outreach, and to thank each and every one of those HU travellers who came to the Meetings and made a donation.

Our best regards
