Brighton mini meet (UK) - Friday 9th January 2009

Brighton mini meet - Friday 9th January 2009, 7:30pm onwards at "The Hanover" pub, Queens Park Road, Brighton, BN2 9ZB.

Don't expect anything especially organised, you'll just find a crowd of friendly people, talking trips, exchanging tips (dry out wet boots by boiling pebbles on your petrol stove for 5/10 minutes, drain the water then empty the pebbles into you boots), lot of good yarns, advice on setting up your bike, what to take or rather what not to take and getting out of scrapes.

So weather you're dreaming of taking off or are just missing life on the road, come along as there are plenty of people to lead you astray.

Hangover Meeting

I'll get there somehow. It's the day after my birthday. I live a long way off too. Why, it's uphill all the way and there's a road to cross. I'll try and manage that half mile, but ask in advance if they can get their coffee machine working again. Hic! Linzi.

Wildman 10 Nov 2008 18:32

Dang! Can't make it. Have a great time!

Tim Cullis 10 Nov 2008 18:40

Fridays are difficult but I will stick it in my diary.

Tim

Mattrex 17 Nov 2008 12:33

Count me in on this one. It's in my diary and I have booked my local accomodation already :thumbup1:. Be good to put faces to names.

Faces

Great! Give me a smiley face then please. Linzi.

Birdy 17 Nov 2008 19:30

I was planning on leaving on the 5th of Jan for Africa, but I think I may postpone for a few days, and pop in to this mini meet on the way down.

When I went down for the last one (erroneously on the week before its actual date) I met quite a few of the Brighton bike crew, who said they would love to see us off from there. I am going to take up their offer, as we are sailing from doon south anyway. It would also be good to meet a few more Hubbers before jetting away, so I'm going to make this Hannover meet my pre-send off-send off.

Look forward to meeting you all.

Joel

Chris

riderbob 9 Dec 2008 11:26

I might be up for this as long as I'm not travelling for work.

Birdy 15 Dec 2008 21:18

Just call me Cheeky Bastard.

Would any Brighton Hubber be able to provide me with a small space to lay my head on Friday night, and maybe Sat night?

I am getting a ferry from Portsmouth on the Sat or Sun, so wondered if anyone local could put me up.

I am housetrained and mix well with others.

Thanks,

Birdy.

There's lots to grasp when you first start overlanding apart from the mechs there is lots of paperwork. I've got a few overland bits and bobs that someone might be interested in looking at: carnet de passage; COMESA yellow card; african road atlas; digital t4a maps etc. etc...

Shout if anyone wants me to bring them along.

Graham uk 4 Jan 2009 18:52

how many people are attending this then? any numbers, i'm thinking of coming down to say hello and will probably be on the bike to see how it does in the cold and wet lol

JCB1981 6 Jan 2009 11:42

Recently relocated to Brighton, so would be great to meet some fellow local bikers.

Jake 6 Jan 2009 15:03

Birdy - dont look like your getting that offer of a bed for the night, so just to help I will speak up for birdy (and I am sure all the northern and scottish section will agree) - he is a great lad and a little help from fellow HU members would be great for him (and his budget) and I would have no problem putting him up for a few nights (or is that putting up with him for a few nights) - as he is setting off to africa from your meet I hope someone helps him out.
Birdy wishing you good luck on your travels have a great run and hope to meet up with you somewhere - someplace. Jake - and all of the northern HU section.

Iain 6 Jan 2009 16:13

Birdy,

I sadly can not put you up, but I'd be glad to chip in towards a place to stay for the night to ensure your final send off is nice and easy, not killing all your cash.

I know there are a couple of back packers in town, here a link to one place that has two different building. They say it's from £15 a night, so I'll happily cover £15 for Friday night, if you have no joy with a bed for the night elsewhere:

The Grapevine Hotel Brighton - Stag and Hen Night accommodation for Brighton and Hove, UK

See you Friday.

Iain.

Linzi 6 Jan 2009 16:38

Beer Money

Just call me a cheeky bastard too. Can anyone pay my beer bill for the night of the 9th Jan ? Linzi

Giggle,giggle.

Mattrex 6 Jan 2009 16:43

Sorry Linzi but er um no! but 10 out of 10 for trying.:sneaky2:

Iain 6 Jan 2009 16:44

You can have half a lager shandy.

Mattrex 6 Jan 2009 16:49

Go on then I will show my generosity by buying the other half of iain's lager shandy! :thumbup1:

Linzi 6 Jan 2009 16:57

Whooppee

Hey. Right I'll DEFINITELY be there. Cheers. Linzi.

Birdy 6 Jan 2009 21:10

Thanks very much Linzi and Iain for your very kind offers, it is awesome to see the lengths fellow Hubbers will go to for you.

And Jake, thanks for the positive review, it is much appreciated, would be great to see you on the road sometime. I promise I won't snore as badly as I did on the second night at Tan Hill.

As for where I am staying, I couldn't expect anyone to put cash up for a hostel, despite it being a very considerate offer. Last time in Brighton I remember a lovely sleep under the pier, maybe I will do the same thing again?

I look forward to the meet, it is always good to see Hubbers. My little Cub will be purring outside by opening time.

Thanks all,

Birdy

PS, There's a beer in for both Linzi and Iain for being such lovely people.:mchappy:

oscar1 6 Jan 2009 22:07

Does the mini meet

extend to Land Rover owners preparing for an overland trip? I am the owner of a Tengai/KLR 1989 650, but am heading off down the west coast of Africa as soon as the carnet arrives in my 1998 110 Defender - within in the next two weeks, I hope...I've been rather urbanized in Beijing for three years, so I am also pretty poor at communicating with people who have not lived in smog and concrete for any period of time (London does not count). Forgive me if I turn up and just grunt but I'll listen intently to any useful tips. Oscarreg

Linzi 6 Jan 2009 22:15

Of Course

I'm certain we all agree welcome along. Linzi

Birdy 6 Jan 2009 22:20

The more the merrier.

I also have a bit of an agenda, because it will be useful to have someone with a 4x4 following me down the West Coast, picking up the bits that have been falling off my bike.:thumbup1:

Birdy

Iain 7 Jan 2009 08:42

Birdy,

I'm pretty hardy, but you're looking at -5 with an on shore wind this time of year, not like in the late summer. So I'd go for a cheap and cheerful back packers, as you're more than likely get breakfast, they'll look after your kit, most of them even read you a bed time story. You'll probably get the place to yourself, as there's almost no trade this time of year. I have had a scout about and the deals seem to be as follows:

Back packers

Baggies Back Packers, 33 Oriental Place - 01273 733 740 - Prices from £13 - Courtyard parking I think, but check.

Grape Vine, 75 Middle Street or 29 North Road - 01273 703 958 - Prices from £13

St Christopher's, 10 Grand Junction Road - 01273 202 035 - Prices from £16

Of course, far be it from me to put you off sleeping under the pier, I'm verging on a fare weather biker here!

Iain.

PS

The offer still stands.

Mattrex 7 Jan 2009 10:11

Birdy, Check your email's...:thumbup1:

Mini meet

well as luck would have it a job has come up in Brighton for me on Friday, so I will be able to pop along for the evening, bikes still having some mods done to it so it will have to be the works vans but what the heck as long as I can get along.

So looking forward to see some new faces, and see who's going where and when.

cheers,

Colin
(Bournemouth)

Birdy 7 Jan 2009 20:39

Thanks very much for those places Iain, I will get myself inside one. I may be fairly stupid, but don't think I am quite stupid enough for camping out on the beach at this time of year. Besides my girlfriend may be coming up to see me off, and I think she would rather sleep somewhere with a roof.

Thanks for the offer too Matt, most kind of you. But, as I have already mentioned, the lady might be coming, so we will have to get somewhere in town.

Looking forward to it.

Birdy

Linzi 7 Jan 2009 21:03

A pier ences

Hi Birdy, given that you sometimes sleep under piers, perhaps you could give me some tips on how one also attracts a lady! Always seems to evade me. Linzi.

Birdy 7 Jan 2009 21:20

Haha, she's far too good for me, but also happens to be attracted to the trampy look.

She's beautiful and not at all trampy, but likes her men to look like they've slept under a pier, and stink of roll ups and spirits. I like to oblige. :thumbup1:

freddy 8 Jan 2009 19:41

Birdy 8 Jan 2009 20:31

Thanks Iain for your hostel work, I think we'll be staying at the St. Chris one, it is close enough to the pier to bring back fond memories.:thumbup1:

Looking forward to seeing you all, looks like it will be quite a large 'mini meet.'

Birdy.

riderbob 9 Jan 2009 16:35

As suspected I can't be there. :( Enjoy the night and have a pint for me.

Iain 10 Jan 2009 08:39

Thanks everyone for coming out on such a cold night, it was nice to meet some more hubbers. I think the plan is to do another one in March.

The mystery still remains though, what happened to Paul, after calling Mike earlier in the day, we were expecting you? Hope you can make the next one.

Good luck Birdy, look forward to the reports.

Iain.

Bundubasher 10 Jan 2009 10:04

Yeh...good luck Birdy and good luck to one and all in this coming year!

Many interesting people, old and new, and was especially good to see everyone made the effort in spite of the ridiculous cold!

A little hard to focus on more than one person at a time but that was due to the popularity of the pub rather than anything else.

Anyway, glad I went and I look forward to seeing you all again at the next one!

Go well.

enzo

wishfull traveller 10 Jan 2009 12:02

Just to say thanks for welcoming me into the Hubbers in such a friendly way and I am looking forward to the next one and now back at work thinking of distant places!
Thanks
Matt:thumbup1:

Linzi 12 Jan 2009 09:26

Louder?

To whoever I was speaking and then dried up. Sorry. I have now almost lost my voice from straining over the noise. I really dislike noisy environments, Sorry. Linzi.

Linzi 16 Jan 2009 17:38

Passed

Hi folks, to those of you who know Mike from the meets, he just passed his test with a perfect score no less. From a chance meeting in Brighton, HU, Brighton meeting and now he's off overland to Oz. Horizon unlimited. Give the guy a cheer. Linzi.

Iain 18 Jan 2009 20:37

That's great news, well done Mike.
