Horizons Unlimited Ireland 2011
We actually pulled it off last year.
So.............back by popular demand! The Second HORIZONS UNLIMITED IRELAND meeting in ENNISKILLEN on 27/29 May 2011. The event will be at the same excellent location as last year with camping and other facilities second to none. Want to fuel that nagging dream of travelling on two wheels in Ireland, UK, Europe, Africa, South America, North America, Asia, Australia, the World? Why not come along and listen and talk to the guys and girls who have been there, done it and returned to tell the tale. Want to meet up with like-minded dreamers who don't think you are crazy to be planning "the big trip"? People who share that dream? Want to listen and talk to ordinary people who have done extraordinary things? Been to amazing places? Can convince you that you CAN do it too? Want an excuse for a trip to Ireland? Want to find out what "mummers" are? Then you should plan to be there. We have an ever growing list of presenters to inspire you. JOE THE CELT (what more can I say?) SI JOHNSTON (see above) (the last two observations are for those fortunate enough to have caught Joe and Si last year!) PADDY TYSON (campaign co-ordinator for MAG and author of "The Hunt for Puerto del Faglioli) GEOFF HILL ("Way to go" , The road to Gobbler's Knob", "Around Oz on a Triumph" OISIN HUGHES (you must have read Oisin's blog on UKGSER! Hi
A few more presenters (more later!!) Marc O'Loideoin is setting off today on a wee run down to The Gambia. Africa! On a Gapper! (Irish nickname for a Honda C90....think ..where the engine should be is a ...gap!) He, and a few friends will ride reconditioned and preped C90's all the way down to a hospital in The Gambia. On arrival the bikes, motorcycle clothing, and support vehicle (loaded with spares and medical supplies) will be donated to the hospital. You can find more details on Marc's blog site at Gambia on a Gapper! Marc will be giving a report on this inspiring charity motorcycle adventure in Enniskillen. Neil and Helen Laughlin are presently in Katmandu having left Ireland in September 2010 on a Tiger (self-built diesel bike) and a F650GS. Full report on the adventure promised at Enniskillen. Registered yet? bier |
A question for a wet Friday afternoon!
What would you do if you were 24, didn't have a bike licence, no insurance, no experience and no bike gear? Ruth Houston had the answer. She headed off to Vietnam , hired a 125cc and rode off down the Ho Chi Min trail to Ho Chi Min city! Want to hear her story? It's time you registered for the HU Ireland weekend in Enniskillen on 27/29 May. Register at: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/mee...reland2011.php And remember. Numbers will be restricted this year. So get your name down to be sure of a place. |

Difficult question to answer Donal. We had a great first meeting last year with about 130 people attending. Feedback suggested that we should limit the numbers this year to something similar to retain the friendly laid-back atmosphere of the weekend. At the moment we have about 60 confirmed registrations but I expect that this will increase quickly in the coming weeks. So, to answer your question, there is no deadline date but there will be a numbers deadline. Best advice is to get registered as soon as possible! Sure you know it makes sense!! Just look at the list of people giving talks and practical demonstrations! You are guaranteed to have itchy feet after the weekend. And a lot of information and contacts to help you make it happen! |

Sounds great. If I can get the Bantam running reliably I'll try to make it across.
Not sure how Albert (the Bantam) will cope with a camping load (haven't tried yet). Is the Westville hotel within staggering distance of the venue? Any other accomodation available for recommendation? B&Bs etc? Cheers, Matt :) |
Really looking forward to catching this meet ..........any excuse for a trip !!
Setting out from Portsmouth and hope to catch the Sunday ferry from Fishguard into Rosslare. Taking a few days out to experience the Ring of Kerry and Dingle penninsula........ Anyone on the road heading in the same direction (or opposite direction) would be great to meet for a beer and spin a few yarns bier Lou 'ninja turtle' butler Normal is a failure of potential |
The final two presentations.
(we have no room left for any more speakers! 17 talks and 3 demonstations will keep you busy. We have to leave some space for eatin', drinkin' and chattin' !!) http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/.../gathering.gifhttp://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/.../gathering.gif Mairaid Hennessy will give "The Pillion's Perspective" on motorbike travelling. A really interesting and much overlooked subject. And a great incentive to bring your significant other ( is that the PC term now for wife/husband/partner/girl/boy friend?) to Enniskillen? You might also learn what all those digs in the ribs mean!! Drew Millar will describe his journey From Belfast to Cavannacarragh (slowly) Enigmatic title but you will understand if you come to Enniskillen! Tempus is fugiting and numbers increasing. We will be restricting numbers to ensure an enjoyable and friendly weekend so if you want to be sure of your place, get registering now at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/mee...p#registration |
just signed up to attend. I went to the meeting in British Columbia last year and am looking forward to doing it again in a new place. I was on a big North America trip then and am backpacking now so will probably be trying to hitchhike there unless I work out something before. I think I'll be on the west coast making my way north beforehand. See you all soon beer

Hi Aiden, I agree, Top marks to the organizers.
Thanks for the comment on the photos, and yes, anyone can use any shot on their own site, no worries. Include a link near the image back to my gallery if you like. If anyone wants a print, I can do that too, but I'd charge something for that. If any company wants to use one to promote products then have a chat with me. Merv. |
Thanks for that Merv.
I see that you found the Navar viewpoint. Hope it didn't disappoint. |

Good shots Gerry, hope you didn't let that wee dog get your grub!
Most enjoyable weekend, many thanks. Some of my pics from the weekend. I did the recce run on Friday with Brian, he was concerned and correctly, as it turned out, about trees blocking the route after recent gales. Leaving home squeaky clean, why do I always get the bike polished up to go out and play in the mud? http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...P1110395-1.jpg On the trail ride route Brian gets his first roosting of the day from John on his Tenere http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...P1110400-1.jpg http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110434.jpg Route clearance, Teresa Green and Teresa Black http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110422.jpg http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110433.jpg http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110407.jpg http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110421.jpg I got sent in to dip a toe and test the waters http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110458.jpg Who's sorry now? http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110465.jpg http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1110463.jpg Guess I'm in deep doo doo now...... |
Thoroughly enjoyed it too. thanks to Liam, Jochen, Geraldine, Grant, Susan, David, and everyone else. Must organise better weather for next year though.

What an inspiring and enjoyable weekend!
I hope everyone returned home safely and you are now contemplating your next "Big Trip" On behalf of everyone who attended the weekend I would like to thank the following people and organisations. Each and everyone who gave talks and practical demonstrations. A lot of work went into preparation and delivery and probably that was more nerve wracking than the actual trip being described! They all did a magnificent job. Brian McGirr who led the trail ride on Saturday. Have a look at the photos in an earlier post on this thread. Those were of Brian and Terry recce-ing the trail. They turned up after the recce, literally covered in mud, with enormous grins on their mud splattered faces, Brian with the chainsaw still strapped to the back of his KTM. A magic moment. Did anyone get a photo? Fermanagh Council and in particular Eddie McGovern, for the invaluable logistical and practical help over the weekend. Lisbellaw Hurling Club for the use of their facilities. Cavanacarragh Hall and, in particular, Una, Seamus and their happy band of volunteers who looked after, fed and watered us so well all weekend. Grant and Susan Johnston whose experience, talks and practical demonstrations added immeasurably to the weekend. Peter and Kay Forwood. What a treat to be in the company of such seasoned travelers and such nice people. What about that amazing "most traveled" HD Electro-Glide? How many stickers have you on your bike?! Merv Colton for capturing some great pictures over the weekend. See his superb photos in a previous post on this thread. The Mummers. 'Nuff said!! All the people and organisations who contributed so generously to the treasure trove of raffle prizes. For the record you raised £500 for Motorcycle Outreach charity and the trail riders donated £150 to the local Children's Heartbeat Trust. Well done to you all. The lucky winners of the major prizes were: Paul Gilhooley Riders Of The Lost Trail - Home Page Discount voucher for trail riding and accommodation in Andalucia Phil Green Motorcycle tours on and off road and bike rental Discount voucher 14 day Tour of Morocco Aiden McParland Welcome to GSheaven Motorcycle rental malaga andalusia discount voucher Bike hire and accommodation in Andalucia Brian Setzer Ferry Crossings UK and Ireland : Nutt Travel and Promotions Coleraine Ferry travel and BSB tickets Show you support and appreciation by checking out all the links above. You might just find that perfect trip! The Horizons Unlimited Ireland organising team who worked so hard to make the weekend such a success. You all know who they are and on your behalf, I thank them all. A very special "thank you" to the dynamic duo of Harry and Daragh who worked tirelessly over the weekend selling raffle tickets. You did a great job, lads and you should be proud of how much you raised. Last and by no means least, thank you to everyone who attended. We can organise to our hearts content but it only works when you all turn up. Thank you. Grant and Susan will be emailing all who attended in the next few weeks and will be asking for your comments and observations on the weekend. Please take a few minutes to reply, especially if you have any thoughts or suggestions which can be incorporated into planning next year's meet. Next year? Yep. The third Horizons Unlimited Ireland meet will happen next year! Confirmation of date and location will soon be flagged on the site. Itchy feet anyone? See you somewhere on the road. Liam |
