Will do Mac. I'll be doing some calling round this next couple of weeks.

i belive the ferry would be the way to go for price....but im no expert...would like to here the shipping price...
i remember someone telling me one time in iceland that it was almost the same price to airfreight than to ship...but i dont know...and people in iceland are usualy optomistic on prices ( eg...way off the real price) |
Had a quote from Eimskip today which was £671 plus shipping insurance (£63.00). He did say if I could get four bikes together then we would receive a 10% discount.
This price is return price too. Seems a no brainer, it is quite a saving as opposed to overland and ferry via Smyril line which was our original plan. At least this way we can have two weeks in Iceland as to just one with the ferry/overland option. I've never flown and shipped the bike, so I'm quite excited at the adventure and can't wait! |
sounds better than i was expecting...
did not know the ferry was so expensive for bikes |
Got my holidays confirmed and the flights booked this evening, Just have to organise the shipping of the bike now. Can't wait:D

Some cheap Icelandair flights at the moment.............I'm booking GLA-KEF return flying with my expedition mountain bike for £178 and an exchange rate of ISK190-£1 isn't too bad either. Leaving around the 26th May and returning home on the 6th June.
I've given up on taking the GS up there at the moment and my last two trips were cycling in Iceland............The ringroad this time instead of bits of it..........Volcanoes have been a wee bit of a problem both the Eyjafjallajokull and the Grimsvotn eruptions caused problems! Sounds like shipping your bikes is a great solution and saves a load of time on the ferries........It used to take us three days each way Aberdeen-Shetland-Faroes-Seydisfjordur East Iceland we you could use that route and we only ever had either six or nine days in Iceland when we got there and always going early season at the end of May the weather could still be very dicey! |
Not sure when you're going, but I'm landing at KEF 27 May, picking up bike and riding 1-10 June, 2014. perhaps see you there?

Shame that! We're not going until mid August. You'll have to give me a few pointers upon your return :)
|
Ah just seen your original post - let us know how you get on with the shipping as we will do this if we go back to save time.
Also Icelanders are very friendly and accommodating people, so worth asking when you arrive. Or do what we did - wear your gear over - and pack into Ortlieb roll bags instead of suitcases. They fold down small. |
I've got everything sorted here, bike is shipping out next week, I'll follow behind and hopefully pick the bike up in Reykjavik 8th august. Getting excited now:mchappy:

Me too Mac! Just waiting on a 2-1 piece for the exhaust so I can fit an auxillary fuel tank for a visit to the Highlands. Then we're good to go, bike being shipped on 5th August. Cannae wait! :scooter:

I'll have to rely on a couple of Jerry cans, I had a fun weekend trying to figure out how to pack everything despite having had a few practise camps. Going to strap on a pair of bicycle panniers to the crash bars tonight think I'll need the room for water and food, or heavy bits as I need to move some weight forward and low. Well be a busy evening, working until 8 tonight, dropping bike in Dublin tomorrow. Leaving every thing to last minute as usual
