Motorcycle trip in mid April
Hi all,
Holidays granted for 2024 and I´ve got second half of April (15 to 30). Do you think it is possible to ride along Iceland with my motorcycle on those dates? Or it´s a completely nonsense due to weather and road conditions during April? Many thank´s for your advices bier |
April will see daytime temperatures barely above freezing. You definitely cannot expect snow-free main roads, nevermind smaller country roads and gravel roads.
Rent a car. :) |

That´s a difficult question, both because no one knows how the weather will be and I drive a 4x4 not a motorcycle. Second half of april is about the time I change from winter to summer tires. That means most of the snow will be gone and the main roads clear of snow most of the time. But it is very well possible there still will be snowy days. Usually when it snows at night in late april , that snow will vanish at daytime. But as said, it also can happen you have a bad weather front coming over and it can be snowing for a couple of days. So the question is, can you and your motorcycle handle some snow on the roads? If not, do you have the time to relax for half a day or in worst case a day or rwo? What I wrote here applies to the main roads. All the small roads and tracks over mountains and in the interior (highlands) of the country are deffinately closed and impossible. Also campsites won´t open before half may. When you like to walk, the paths to most touristic places will be clear of snow or covered in snow. But don´t think about hiking in nature (of the beaten track) because it will be too wet and boggy, marshy. To summarize: Is it possuble? When you stick to the main roads, yes. Is it comfortable on a motorcycle? I don´t know. I think it is very early in the year and you could either be lucky or unlucky with the weather. I think you pay a lot of money for a trip to Iceland, spending that much money I would go between late july and half september to get the most out of it. Best regards, Rögnvaldur |
Hi folks,
many thanks for your advices. Yeap, it all depends on how weather arrives next year. It could be possible or no way at all. However, I´m aware that the interior gravel roads are a no-go at April; my plan was only circunnavigate the country on the main one. Spend a full week over there, and board the ferry back to mainland Europe. Yesterday I spend some time on the Smiryl website looking for the general conditions of the tickets. Basically, you can cancel the ticket booking a month before the departure, and they´ll give back the 100% of the money. And this is where I´m right now...Should I buy it or not? :oops2: Have fun mates, bier |

But when only driving around the island, maybe with some detours, we are talking about 1500 - 2000 km in 7 days. Even if you couldn´t ride for 2 days because of weather/road conditions, it wouldn´t be a big deal; you wouldn´t miss your ferry back to Europe. And if you would be that unlucky you would not be able to ride at all........you could always rent a car. |
