Only 4 days!
A friend and I are heading to Iceland in early June to hire bikes and do a mini tour of 4 days. We are quite happy to do long days if need be or spend more time seeing some sights at a slower pace.
We have questions we hoping you can help us with. We are a bit stuck on what route to do. We want to get a real flavour of the place, but as we can't do F routes (hire bikes) and haven't enough time for the circuit, we're not sure where is best to go. Any itinerary ideas would be really appreciated. Secondly, we hear it can be cold in Iceland, but how cold/wet are we talking? The real question is - how much warm gear for riding do we need? Hope you can help. Cheers Andy |
Start with the map of road closures: Search the web | Road conditions and weather | English | Vegagerðin
If passable, route 35 allows to see a bit of the highlands without water crossings etc. Depending on conditions I'd visit the Ice Lagoon, route 35, and the golden circle - all of which can be done on a rental, and there are some other interesting sights on the road as well. Consider an organized 4x4 day trip into highlands. I don't know the weather in June, but would want to be prepared for rain, extreme winds and temperatures near freezing. Search for reports on travels in June and ask your rental company for tips, e.g. field notes from Iceland June 2011 - ADVrider |
My tenth trip there again cycling Icelands ringroad from 26th May-7th June...............It's still early season so you'll get what you get and I've had mild sunstroke and a serious hammering from the wind and rain just depends!
Take warm and dry gear................The first time I toured on my GS I was always cold and I'd been up to the Nordkapp the previous year in -5 degrees C but it was dry there..............Chances are you get mixed weather with the chance of strong winds at some point! Could be lovely weather and if you head down Route 1 towards vik you'll be riding in the wettest part of the country............Check out www.vegerdin.is for the road conditions, weather and some fantastic webcams! Have a great trip FP. |
I'm heading back on Wednesday but only for a few days in Reykjavik for some beer beer beer beer. Bring warm and waterproof gear, Maybe something you can layer up with. You could be lucky and have 4 sunny calm days but chances are it will be really windy, cold and possibly rainy. Maybe not all at the same time. As said before the golden circle tour, head north on the 35 then loop around the Westfjords eventually heading back towards Reykjavik. It would take a good long day to drive towards Vik and on to the Iceberg Lagoon and back again.
The Westfjords are amazing. Even better when the sun is shining. But the whole country is beautiful. Hopefully I will get back up next year for another trip on my bike. |
Thanks
Thanks for your posts.
I appreciate all the advice. Starting to get very excited now - my first biking out of Scotland for 5 years! I'll post back to this thread on my return. Fingers crossed for good weather. Andy |
