By coincidence I bought a 2010 650 Versys recently for European touring. At £2,000 for bike with 15,000 miles on the clock and in good condition I reckon that's some kind of bargain. It's probably not a bike to fall in love with, but the specs and no-nonsense performance are good. Kawasaki has a reputation for reliability too - handy on a long distance bike. 60mpg with a 230 mile tank range. Comfortable seat, good suspension and handling, and decent brakes. It's not really an off road bike, though you could put on duel purpose tyres if you didn't want anything tougher than gravel tracks. For "hard adventure" maybe not this bike, but for touring with a little off piste it's a damn good choice.

I'm working for a Kawasaki dealer at the moment. And I worked for one way back when the first Versys 650 came out.
Kawasaki generally get things right the first time and then hold onto a working model for a long time with just minor tweaks. This is far different from the European model (BMW, KTM etc) where they release horrendously finicky and unreliable models and perfect them just before they're discontinued. The 650 motor is excellent. It's fairly low tuned and UBER reliable. They use it in the Vulcan and Z650 also. Along with the ER6. A very versatile engine. ER6's are used by riding schools all over as they're are near indestructible and take a beating very well. You can't go far wrong with a Versys. It's not very quick. It's not super light. And it doesn't have toys are gimmicks. It's just utterly dependable. HOWEVER !! It is still built to a budget. They do rust if uncared for. Keep it clean and lubricated and it will last 50 years. |
just bought for road touring new Versys 650, very nice bike with long range.
