KLR 650
Hi all, I just got back from Bike Week in Fla.For the 1st time of 19 trips there I rode down. Not such a long trip ,850 miles, but after filling with gas at A-1-A in veiw of the Atlantic I heard a bad chain noise.
I pulled the sprocket cover off and found that the sprocket retaining thingy was'nt locking it on .It's teeth were about 70% worn away.No Kawasaki dealer within 125 miles had this piece. I was able to massage it into a workable form with a ballpeen hammer, but not really trust the fix. I'm just glad for the lesson before my trip to Alaska this summer when I'll definatly pack a spare. ------------------ ride, smile, repeat as nessasary |
Never seen anything like that on any of my 8 KLR (6KL650C and 2 KL650A) with some of them close to or above 100K km. Do you use aftermarket sprockets?

The sprocket was worn some 15,00 miles worth but the problem was with the bolt on retainer.I just ordered 2 from my local shop yesterday and plan to keep one in the tankbag as a spare, which probably will never have trouble with it again. They cost $4.10 eachso not expensive just not easy to find when needed. ------------------ ride, smile, repeat as nessasary |
Are you referring to the countersprocket retaining plate, or the nut? If it's the plate, Dual Star's comment on this item is of interest, http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Bran...ng%20Plate.htm
As you've already decided, carrying a spare is good advice. Mike Idaho www.rtwrider.net |
