Is it possible to register a KLR 650 in Europe
Hello,
Is it possible to import and register a KLR 650 from 2015 (bought in Chile) in Europe? As far as i know they are not imported to EU anymore since a while because of noise- and polution regulations. My model have a Cat and is preaty quiet (for my taste to quiet). Would it be necessary to do some modifications to make it leagal for Europe? Does anyone knowe something about this topic? I have recently bought a KLR650 in RSA with the intention of importing to the UK in 2016. You must be able to do it - there was a uk dealer selling one he imported to the UK a couple of months back. I have read up on the UK test and there is nothing obvious that should be a problem (headlight and speedo adjustments needed for mph/kph and lhd/rhd tweaks aside). I was worried about emissions but the test seems more relaxed than i was expecting. I have the guidance somewhere for the UK - happy to dig it out if it would help. Cheers Andy |

I had contact with KAWA Austria and they told me that a registration in the EU is not possible because of noise- and exhaust regulations. A modification is possible but the tests for registration are expensive. I try to get more informationes from the registration office in austria and try to finde some actual exhaust test/measuremente from my bike. Thx for your help. Greetings Martin |
Best to read up on EU import taxes for motor vehicles not built in the EU (assuming you're talking about a permanent import).

Yes, permanent import. I was also thinking about leaving the bike registered in Chile and just buy a insurance for europe if it wount work.
Oh sh.. i dont know what to do. If i sell my bike in Ecuador i can travel for at least 3 more month in asia. But i love that bike and realy would like to go around europe with here. But if the import gets to difficult and to expensive i think i just should sell her and get something else for Europe. Thx for your advices. Greetings Martin |

Alternately, just bring it in to the EU on a Chilean plate and run it for 6 months in any single EU country, then move on (or don't move on) as the case suits you. I imagine the other EU countries will have similar rules. Alternately, just move it between countries every 6 months, as above. |
