Rear View Mirrors and Breaks
Hi All,
I am new here and new to my klr650... The two things that I have noticed is that the breaks are like mush and the rear view mirrors are not good. Any hints??? |
I haven't had any problems with the mirrors on my 91 KLR. At highway speeds they are still quite usable. As for the breaks, they are indeed not the best, however, in my opinion they are adequate and much better than some bikes I've had in the past. The brakes can be improved somewhat by replacing the front break line with a stainless steel type. You could replace the rear one as well, but I didn't see the point as it as short compaired to the front. Also, I replaced the pads on both front and rear with a better set made by Galfer (I think). www.dual-star.com sells low vibration mirrors - they are on my wishlist as i find the stock mirrors get very hard to use at higher speeds on many roads. The front brakes are mushy, but like kurt said high qquality braided ss lines are a sure bet.

You could also try fitting mirrors from a Honda XR650L which are great mirrors. And I'm almost certain that those mirrors Dual-Star is selling are actually exactly that. They appear to be identical.

I'm happy to hear that someone else's rear view mirrors are bad... I thought it was my coffee.
DON'T try the mirror vibration dampers from JC Whitney. They do not work. I have decided to live with it until by new BMW arrives. HEHE 2dogs |

No to the BMW. Just joking. Well... I guess I'd TAKE one if it was given to me. But the KLR is the one.

Heck I'll take any unwanted BMW's. Add it to the one I already have. But seriously, I have had no trouble with vibration and rear view mirrors. Even with knobbies at 75mph +, I can see behind well enough. Maybe you have balancing issues. 'Course I've had bikes with mirrors useless above 50, so maybe I've learned to live with it.

Well Kurt: I have such a bike: my 2001 KLR has severe mirror vibro at 40- 50 mph... ABSOLUTELY worthless. I've gotten use to it. If I really need to use them, I'll pull the clutch and let off the gas(probably won't find that method in an MSF course).

OK, got the bike back from the shop. Thanks for the advice to go back to them. They pulled the spark plug and saw right away that it was running too lean. It runs a lot different now that they have adjusted the carb. The little riding I have done has me now wondering if they adjusted it too much. Pt too much gas into the mix. I say this because it still runs a bit slow. But we'll see. I guess I am a bit too picky, too.
About the mirrors- it's not the vibration that bothers me, it is the field of view. Can't see shit. At high speeds I feel it always needs adjusting. |
My KLR's a 91. Vibration's not an issue for me: Very good for a single. Maybe there's a problem in the counterbalancing of the motor. Or the newer models aren't as smooth. Or mines just broken in more (but only has 8K miles).

My Mirrors on my 01 KLR are worthless above 50MPH, want some BMW mirrors or DS mirrors are also on wishlist.
