I'm in the Perth down the bottom, where it is currently warming up fast. Funny enough my godfather was an Iain, a knight of the realm nonetheless, but they spelt it the simple way. I suppose I should be glad that they didn't use the full-on Gaelic, as that makes Iain look simple. :biggrin3: |

You did not say how many miles your bike has done, others that have had the similar problems have all been around the 10,000mile mark. My 2006 model 640adv has done 7,500miles so does that mean I can expect the same probs? And its not that cold here yet, but the gritters where out on the way home tonight (i hate salt) |
How about 235 kilometres on the odo :(
I'll be kind and suggest that its some debris that was in the piping/carb before the pre-delivery. However I thought I might get better service on a bike that was effectively 5 days old. The only salt we see here is on the beach or the inland dry lakes..... EDIT 11 Dec. It appears that some unidentified granular compound was in the tank and when filled it made its way through to the carbie, causing the blockage. |
The beast is back! Some granular/sand-like material had made it to the pump and carbie. No idea what it was, but it had to have been in the tank when it was filled for delivery.
Certainly runs a lot better now. Although the tank now appears clean, an inline filter should show up any further potential problems. |
The BST-40 does carry a tiny pre-filter screen, it sits in the outside end of the carb inlet pipe. To remove it just pry it free {carefully}and pull it out.

From what was in the pump I don't think cleaning the screen would have helped, but thanks for the tip. Just been for a quick 160km road/dirt ride. Works like a dream now, smoother and more responsive/powerful all round, and I don't think it just due to the engine loosening up.

I think Bill is spot on about the limited lifespan of the float needle/seat assembly, I've done about 19,000 KM since the last change and on todays ride I see that it's starting to weep again. Tomorrow I will order a new set.
