KTM 1190 adventure air filter problem
This is something KTM should look at
KTM 1190 Adventure problems, start , dust - YouTube You guys should check your own filter |
I've heard about this on a few forums. It chimes with other opinions here (i.e. Colbatch - http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ure-bike-69964 ) that the people who design and market these bikes never actually ride or test them in the places their marketing claim they are to be used. The "adventure bike" market is so phoney, one big con.

Nasty business....oops..
|
Yeah, this should not be happening on brand new $18,000 motorbikes.
The 1190 was on my short list for a new bike.....its now off until this issue is fully resolved Anyone know if this is a market specific problem for South African bikes or is it the same design airbox/cover/filter worldwide ? KTM need to put their hands up, admit there is a problem and help the owners now, before too much damage is done to loyal customers and to their reputation. KTM should give any 1190 owner whose bike has suffered this issue the option of a brand new 2014 bike that hopefully does not suffer this issue, or a new engine, a letter of apology and some cash/weekend break for their trouble. |

It's a major job to check the air-filter, I think someone mentioned 28 screws:( |
Hi there,
I am on a RTW with a 2013 KTM 1190 Adv R. I drove to a lot of desert areas at the beginning of my trip. At round about 12000 Kilometers I had huge problems to get the bike started. The original paper filter isnt't good for sand and dust.. I gould just get it started with some preheading and assistance of cars... Was a pain in the as and even the KTM dealer in Chile couldn't find a solution. At the end they checked the valves and this solved the problems. Now at round about 25000 Kilometer I am getting the same problem again. One theory is, that all the dust in the airbox closes the valves by time - so the bike starts not so easy... The Unifilter should fix this issue - I am still waiting for it... Greetings Martin |
Hi Martin,
I would have some concerns with dust damaging the cylinder bores/rings and working its way into the bottom end of the motor, have you seen any evidence of debris in the used oil during changes ? Good to see you are able to continue with your journey, but a shame you have had these problems, I hope KTM can help you better, good website, thanks! |
Air filter only problem on 2013 Ktm 1190 ?
All I have read seems to suggest it was only a problem on the 2013 bikes and it's been sorted on the 2014 ones ,also that's what my Ktm dealer says.I have a 2014 1190 with 12000 miles no problem so far.Im riding it to Thailand from England soon so hope it should be ok if anyone nows different be good to know.

I'm having it serviced Tuesday the dealer thinks it will be ok ,time will tell .I will update as my trip, develops
Safe riding Paul, |
Really, it's not difficult to sort out, and it's a problem with any internal combustion engine which needs to suck air in (that would be all of them).
The issue only exists if you're spending a LOT of time kicking up desert dust, and the easy solution is to fit a Unifilter or K&N washable filter and use some vaseline / grease on the airbox unions. I've got an 1190 Adventure R and it's easy to fit. And in reality anyone who leaves the standard air filters in shouldn't be riding anywhere outside of Surrey! |
I can tell you the air box problem has not been addressed by KTM. I do my own service on my 2014 and found an air box full of dirt- throttle bodies and butterflys ditto. Love the machine but don't have any trust in the 'professionals' sorting this out. Almost all of my 15,000 miles have been on road as I am still preparing the bike and my finances for the "rough stuff." Guess this wont get the attention it deserves till somebody files the class action. I am about ready to check on that myself.......time and money.

Ktm 1190 air filter
Thanks I have spoken to the dealer and they have said its ok but I will check on the next service they have been very good with everything else.
I managed to break my leg 8 weeks ago so my ride to Thailand cancelled for the time being but I wil update the site when my bike is serviced ( when I can ride it again) Safe riding Paul |
I just did my air filter today after returning from western New South Wales ....1500 kms of dirt riding ...nothing got past the main filter....the snorkel socks had everything from pebbles , bugs, dirt etc .the secondary filter was discoloured slightly and the main filter was like new... I'm convinced the key is the uni filter 3 stage system, and grease the filter sealing points........one weak point is the uni filter socks are not lasting.. I am replacing them regularly..still a small price to pay for the effectiveness of them....

to KTM or not to KTM?
If you ride your KTM in a controlled environment in Austria then maybe KTM. If not Nooooooo! The KTM Adventure series has some serious design flaws. Remember their so called Dakar dirt series bikes are cute providing you have a chase team. However when you market a bike able to tour in all terrain or off road environments they should have been tested for those conditions keeping in mine available fuel's and the absence of QUALIFIED TECH SUPPORT. I do not recommend a KTM adventure bike more then 100 miles from the factory in Austria!!!
Back to KLR 650's (dependable and off road proven!!!):stormy: |
