LC4 Clutch problem
Hi guys,
I got the problem that the clutch suddenly didn't work anymore. Small piece on the washer at the master cylinder broke off. But main prob was to less and dirty oil. In a hurry and no other oil available(Dushanbe, Tajikistan) i filled up with Dot 4 oil. So as soon as i can i'll change it. 2 questions: 1. Can i remove down on the engine, the slave cylinder (to clean it) without taking the cover side off? Or does it sit inside the cover so it has to be removed before i can reach it? 2. Which kind of oil can i put if there's no Biodegradable SAE 10 available? Hope to get some answers soon. Thank you! Cheers, Bossit! :confused1: |
Firts of all DOT 4 is brake fluid not OIL!
Magura clutch work with oil, I thing you can found some automatic transmisson oil (ATF) from Dushanbe. That will work it's not oil you normaly use but it's ok. You can also use fork oil 10W or what your can found. You should flush the system and fix the washer first then fill with new OIL. Do you need some repair manual? |
If you are riding a LC4 with a no-cable clutch... you must have a either a Magura Hymec for all LC4 pre 2003 or the Magura clutch from 2003 onwards... fitted to the bike....
DOT-4 in the clutch ? You f***ed your clutch master and slave cylinder up big time than... sorry for saying that.. you definitely need "Magura blood" no other oil and most definitely no Brake fluid at all. all your seals of the clutch master and slave cylinder are scrap by now if you are running DOT-4 or any other DOT... the only time you have to use "DOT-5.1" is for your brake cylinder, non other... as I say for your "Brembo brakes only" well temporal you can use DOT-4 but never DOT-5 which eats the seals of your brakes as well, but never ever in the clutch system. DOT brake fluid is like paint stripper. |

2 For your clutch you can use light mineral oil, readily available at any drugstore/ pharmacy... ATF will work in a pinch... |
Problem fixed
Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick responds! @Capo Sakke: I now it's not an oil, but used it anyway. You got to make a soltution with what you have. :-) @Spooky: I'm sorry to say man, but it's not like you said. It's not f**ed up. It's still ok. @Island Hopper: Thanks for the explanation how to get the slave cylinder off. And for the oil advice. So i took everything apart and cleaned it properly. The only thing i could find Samarkand was the ATF oil. As there only a handfull of bikes in Uzbekistan. So filled the system with that, let the air out and everything works very smooth. Once home i'll replace it with the proper oil. Thanks again! Bossit.:thumbup1: |
Baby oil tends to work pretty well as a substitute for Magura Blood.

I've been using ATF in my clutch for the past 55,000km on my 640 Adventure. It's a damn sight cheaper than Magura blood. I also use ATF in the forks too!
