Modifications on LC4 640 Adv. before RTW trip
Hi everybody,
First of all I want to repeat that this site is the greatest site on the whole net. I'm a new KTM driver and am planning my trip which I want to start in approx 24 month. I will leave Switzerland and head east. I wondered what modifications should be made on a Ktm 640 Adv. before leaving? First thing to modify? - the seat, have you tried sitting on it for more than a couple of hours? There are several references to seat modifications for the 640 on this site....
KTM say the bike will take you round the world, they don't say you will be comfortable... |

Hey, good luck. I have a 2003 model and all I've done is bought a good sheepskin (in the Pyrenees) and covered the seat with it.... oh, and I changed the hadgrips to soft think foam. Now I can ride it for more than 25 minutes without going numb ! Apart from that, the bikes are great and ready to go,

hej el - might be worth investing in some Scotts metal oil filters which you can clean and re-use indefinately - would save you carrying spare filters with you or having to get them sent out and on a RTW trip it might actually save you money aswell - good lucky
miles p.s. heavy duty inners are a good bet aswell |
Hi.
Fit sleevs on the front fork to prevent dust to eat your forkseals. Trow away the originale alu sprocket and fit a "sthealt" sprocket (steel!!) Fit "fork bleeding walves" Important to bleed the WP forks after a bumpy ride!!!! You may consider the "rally" foot pegs, these are more comfortable for standing the long distance. I have also rejetted the carb. and fitted a Z44 sprocket, bether offroad performance. Changing the seat and gripps is a personaly thing, Iv ridden my 02Adv. 25200km now and think its pretty comfortable.. Happy riding!! |
Besides above suggestions, perhaps?
* airfilter dustcover (twinair) * consider mounting the rear rallye petrol tank for redundancy in crashes... The orginal tank is pretty solid (i know from experience) but still depending on where you are going it could be gold * rallye bash plate with tool and water storage. expensive but well worth it IMHO * through away the cheapy plastic tool box under your seat and replace it with some larger waterproof aluminium box that will hold most of your (long) tools * also got the scotts re-usable oil filters, higher flow and better filtering plus some extra magnets on it... I like it very much * indeed, the alu rear sprocket does not last very long, get a steel one! http://www.allroadtour.fi completely ate my teeth! any others? |

There are lots of things you can do. I agree with many of the comments above.
I have made maybe 40 changes to my 2003 640. But they do tend to fall off/stop working more than the standard bits. But I enjoy fiddling anyway. Have a look at my site for the details, under Bike -> Modifications surprisingly enough. Have fun. ------------------ Jerome http://www.fowb.co.uk |
