Side Stand 640
 

I have been looking at getting a side stand for my 640 Adv. I'm heading off road in about 8 weeks and I'm concerned about the ease of using the centre stand on soft/uneven ground. Any experiences?

I have seen a stand on the Sommer website but an concerned it may require welding on like some others I've seen. Can anyone clarify this?

You can get an aftermarket sidestand from Mo-Tech(out of Germany).This will work with the centerstand.I use the KTM stock sidestand(modified with a piece of three inch square metal plate welded to the bottom-this increases the surface area),and no centerstand.The sidestand works the best most of the time(and the only thing that would stay up in sand,gravel,hot pavement,ect.).

after checking the ktm-sommer website,I would assume that you're looking at part #11853? this appears to be the model made by Mo-tech.If it is,then it is a simple bolt on part.You could also get the KTM factory sidestand and remove the centerstand(check first that your model has the small tab on the left side of the frame).You could always e-mail the tech guys at Sommer,their English is very good,and they tend to reply quickly.KTM has had many variations on their centerstand/sidestands(often changing factory parts.ie-some production runs have sidestands,and then the next batch will have centerstands-The U.S.imports tend to have sidestands).

Yes, bike is often unstable on the centre stand in sand, but wouldn't be without it for simple bike maintainance.

Go for both.

On my 640LC4-E I have a mainstand and the SW Motech sidestand available from Sommer.

During my trip through NW Africa I only had the centre stand fitted - I found it to be no problem in sand. It sank in and the bike then rested on the stand and both wheels. Clearly it's not as stable as using it on a hard surface but I found it adequate.

The SW Motech sidestand I have was bought from Sommer and is of the automatic flip-up variety - it seems to work OK but it can be painful if it flips up and strikes your leg. I haven't tried it with baggage. On my 2000 Adventure that had a tab for fitting a sidestand, which I did, it was always falling over when left on the sidestand with baggage fitted, even when left on a hard level surface.

David - if you have a 03 Adventure I believe the SW Motech sidestand from Sommer should be a simple bolt-on fit. I got instructions with mine. Tell them which bike you have and they should supply the correct stand.

Definately go for both. I found it can be a real pain to put it on the centre stand every time you stop for petrol, particularly if you have luggage.

Some brief advice though....weld on a larger foot and make sure the side stand does not block the full movement of the kick-starter. Not having used the kick-starter for a long time, I found that when I needed to use it, my side-stand slightly impeded it and I had to get the stand rewelded.

I can confirm that KTM Sommer have a bolt-on sidestand, which combines with your existing centre stand.
As Ian says, it is the automatic flip-up variety. Which I'm not 100% comfortable with, but I prefer that to having either or.
KTM Sommer do the sidestands to fit all 640 models.

Okay ! How do you order from the Sommer site (I want both the parts you ordered) ? Send them an email ? then emial them credit card details ? I am struggling to find the electronic shopping cart and my German is non existant http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

There's an English Info page (look for the union flag) accessible from their main page that has contact details/e-mail address. You can use English and they respond in English.

They then reply with the details/prices. You send them your card details or pay the money into their bank account and, at least in the UK, the parts arrive a few days later. Very efficient.
