I dunno what a cernel is either - but I suspect you're thinking of a "carnet" also known as a "carnet de passage".

Regarding second passport, I'm a resident of Sweden and I've applied for and recieved a second passport. I needed it because I travel in work and couldn't be without my passport for the time it takes the various embassies to issue all the visas I needed for my trip.
All I had to do was supply a letter from my employer and then I got my second passport. Could maybe be something for you to try out?

Regarding Carnet requirements for Egypt...
The RAC in the UK have told me that yes, a carnet is necessary for Egypt. The snag is that the deposit is 500% of the value of your bike. This makes it almost prohibitive to enter Egypt...
Anyone found a way around this?

In the UK, a deposit isn't necessary - there is an insurance type scheme - not cheap, but not ridiculous either.

Contact Paul Gowan at the RAC, he's the contact person for carnets, and is very helpful. Tell himn we sent you.

Good idea re 2nd passport, I’m awaiting a reply from the embassy on that one.
500% for Egypt carnet? I’ve recently been from told from oz AA that it’s 150% (+ a fee but not sure whether it applies to private vehicles, can’t seem to get clarification!).
Just been quoted the following for transport;
Freight Adelaide->Alexandria Aus$900, government fees in Egypt US$650-700, ‘handling fee’ US$450! Does this seem a little excessive? It will be cheaper (and probably quicker) to ride the bike there! I’m looking at the alternatives, air-freight, freight to Jordan or Italy, do trip backwards etc, etc…

Find somewhere else to ship to and ride into Egypt if you really need to or want to go that route.

And I'd be willing to bet that the quoted fees are only the tip of the iceberg. There'll be something for everyone on the dock, and at customs, "just a few dollars" for everyone.

Hate to be so down on the idea, but it's reality imho...

Kenya is pretty good to ship into, as is anywhere in Europe. South Africa, Namibia also good.

I've spoken with RAC-UK about the carnet. Only the carnet will cost me £120 for ME (not a member) and the deposit is via an insurance company which will cost £400. The value of my bike is about £2000 and they doubled the price of the bike and get the 10% of it. So, 2000*2=4000 10% = £400. They will give me back half of the money which is £200 if I bring the bike back. Just for your information.

Hi all,
A short update. Freighting to Egypt was indeed too much hassle and expense. Despite help from some who live there (thanks guys) it was apparent that freighting to Egypt was going to be a nightmare for a 'virgin' freighter. I looked into nearby alternatives but they weren't much better.
Fortunately, my travel plans were flexible so we're now doing a round-trip from the uk. I hate to do the same road twice but i think it's the easiest way. We'll pick different routes each way anyway. Maybe next-time i'll be a little smarter, a little wiser, and more prepared for things in general!
The bike arrives in the uk early July, I reckon it will be a 6 month trip, see you soon!
