Harvest Trail

It can be hard now for backpackers/visitors with only a vistor visa. There is normally work in vineyard areas in Victoria and SA after Christmas, but very little fruitpicking along the Murray Valley because of water restrictions. One backpacker who stayed recently with us for hospital visits, had come from the Ord River area, and had plenty of work there picking pumkins, melons. He and his friend had worked for cash on a station nearer Perth and were grossly underpaid, but in cash - I think they were "had" ie exploited.

If you have experience with driving tractors and harvest equipment, there is normally work from now until March from Queensland to Victoria.

I was chatting with an English couple last week, both early forties so well outside the working tourist visa. BUT they'd both been here in their late twenties and kept their tax file numbers - surprise surprise no problems getting work even if it is illegal.

I think quoting the TFN is the answer!!

A person on a tourist visa or eVisitor visa CAN NOT apply for a TFN.

Quote:"
During this application process, checks will be made with DIAC to verify that you have:
  • a valid permanent migrant visa, or
  • a valid visa with work rights, or
  • a valid overseas student visa, or
  • a valid visa allowing you to stay in Australia indefinitely."
Reference:
Permanent migrants or temporary visitors to Australia - online tax file number (TFN) application or enquiry

Quoting an invalid TFN is most likely a crime in Australia and I think you would be much better off just working for cash. Don't ask, don't tell principle.
