Looking for Employment with a Tour Company
Hello!
My name is Wendy Crockett. I am 29 years old, and I am looking to secure employment with a tour company. I am a motorcycle mechanic by trade, certified by Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. I am also certified to work on watercraft and other small engines. I have also worked on, and am comfortable working on, just about anything. Until recently I owned my own small brick-and-mortar motorcycle dealership, and I am now operating a mobile mechanic service. While the work is undeniably gratifying, it just doesn't allow me enough freedom to have adventures on the scale that I would like. In addition to the experience that running my business has provided, I also hold degrees in Business Management and Business Marketing, and held an Emergency Medical Technician license for five years prior to devoting my career solely to being a mechanic. I have traveled several hundred thousand miles over the last eleven years, both on-road and off (although primarily on). I have traveled extensively with groups and solo. I am an Iron Butt member, and I have completed numerous Iron Butt rides, all solo, so I am very familiar with the extensive planning that goes into long-distance and long-term rides, as well and all those things you just can't plan for. I camp almost exclusively on my travels (frequently more than two months at a stretch), so "roughing it" is not a problem for me. I work well with people, am highly adaptable, and am willing to take just about any job that will lead to me spending more time in the saddle. I believe my varied experience will make me an asset to the right company, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who has a position available or a lead on a company that does. Thank you! |
The BMWMOA has a list of touring companies.

Good post.
I would directly contact some of the many tour companies operating in the areas that you're interested in. Being a competent female could be a big plus with some companies. |
Your own company
Just a thought....do a tour group for women. Probably has already been done and or would be too expensive for a start up buisness but it might be a unmet need out there. I just did Mt. rainier, highway 99 up to mt. st helens (211 curves in 16 miles) and mt hood with a bit of the old wagon road thrown in. On the way home I rode the forest highway/ nez perz trail paralelling lolo pass in idaho. Lots of good roads around that I would pay someone to show me if I had the time and money. Let me know if you want to run a tour in montana, I live right between glacier and yellowstone.

I have contacted several companies directly over the last year or so, but it seems like I can never quite catch them when they need me. I will definitely check out that list of tour groups, but I figured it can't hurt to post somewhere where they could find me as well!
I have riden fairley extensively through Washington (including the Mt. St. Helens area - three loops in the last two years) and all through Glacier National Park. (It was there that I learned the important lesson that places with "Glacier" in the name should be fully expected to snow on me in late June, whether or not I am prepared.) I've actually traveled in every state and all across Canada, and in my unbiased opinion, I think the Western US and Canada has some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery anywhere. I would certainly be up for starting a tour company that showcases this area. Anyone who is interested in such a venture, please drop me a line! Incidentally, I forgot to mention a few things: I currently live in California, but I don't need to stay here. Also, I spent the last several years prior to opening my own shop as head of fleet maintenance for a motorcycle and ATV rental company on the PCH. |
Call Karen Thompson, she is listed on the link below.

Hi Wendy,
Seems like you're over qualified to be a guide. |
I am willing to go anywhere, but my shortcoming is that I only speak English and a bit of medical Spanish. I have traveled a bit in Central America and Great Britain, and will be going to South Asia around the time of the gathering in Thailand. Aside from that, I have more ambition than experience internationally.
Starting my own company is definitely something I am looking into, but I want to make sure that if I do that, I do it right. No sense in being mediocre! In the mean time, I have gone about contacting companies directly again (Thanks for the link John), so we'll see what pans out. Thanks again for all the good tips and feedback! |
Us to S america
HI WENDY.

Darn, I wish I had your skills! :-)
Even if speaking only English I bet you get along in large parts of the world. I mean, many of us non-English Europeans use English when abroad. Nevermind where - English it is. And it works. Most of the time. Especially when paired with the universal body language. Naturally there are parts of the world where other languages is a must, but even with English you have a big chunk of the world to choose from, don't you? Happy hunting! |
Wendy try motoaventures.com they are based in Andora and operate trips there and in Africa. With youre skills and language you should have no worries if they have a vacancy. Good Luck:thumbup1:

Hello, I too am looking to find employment as a guide. I have been riding since I was five years old, just turned 58 and as of yet still have not been down. I have a background in Corp Management, Theater Arts, Public Speaking, and have been a Seminar Leader for years. In other words I know and love people. A side not, I have also ran for public office, I now know what Custer must have felt like at the Little Big Horn.
