Looking for work in Australia
Hello people currently attempting a round the world tour on my bike, due to miscalculatons I have had to change my route and make my way to Australia from Mongolia.
I am looking for a job. Im landing in Sydney but can do anything/go anywhere. Im an experienced carpenter and 25 years old.. That being said... I can do any job if noone has anything carpentry wise. Even the 3 months farmwork to get it out the way in preparation for a 2nd year visa if i decide to stay a 2nd year. Please let me know or let me know where to look or what to do to get a job. I plan to get me and the bike landed in Sydney in the next 2 weeks! Thanks Rob Me My Bike and I |
Assume you have an official working holiday visa and Tax Number so you can look for work in the 'above ground" sector, there is a government job search web site
https://jobsearch.gov.au/Job/Search/ has regular occupation as well as a special harvest section. |
Hey thanks for the reply, I have the visa in place but not sure about the tax number.
Im sure I will have to get an Ozzie bank account when I get there, Im pretty sure I apply for the tax number there too? Anyone know any different? |

Yes, need to be in Australia. Probably do a fair bit of it on-line at https://iar.ato.gov.au/IARWeb/defaul...id=1&outcome=1 If you search on-line you will get adverts re getting tax file number, but best to deal straight with the tax department. No cost involved. Obviously there is work to be found without visa and tax number, but first you will either get a much lower rate of pay, or pay a lot more tax and or it might be harder to get work because employers get into heaps of trouble if they get caught hiring people under the counter. Some sectors of the building industry are heavily unionised, but if you look for work with smaller builders working on domestic housing and smaller projects, or most places away from the big cities, you won't have any problems. |
Thanks for the information there mate!

Do you have a "one year working holiday visa" already sorted? you cannot get one on arrival you that right? if your arriving on a three month tourist visa dont mention work of any kind, even looking for work.
Cash jobs are hard to come by, if not impossible unless you know the guy who is giving you work & even then its risky, if you get caught you will be booted out of the country immediately & you passport will be stamped with a two year exclusion from Aussie. Already have a 1 year granted working visa, no tax number or bank account yet. Just looking for suggestions of places to look for work. Or if anyone has any work to offer..
|
Plenty of jobs on SEEK :thumbup1:
First get your tax file number by simply walking in the tax office with your passport & filling out a form they will issue with the number there & then, then open a bank account (you need your tax file number to open an account) & then get a midicare card which is just like an NHS card in case you need medical stuff. You will need an address for all of this stuff, i used the backpackers address but its polite to ask them first (everyone does it). I did all of the above on the day i landed (takes a few hours) but get that out of the way. Mezo. |
Also jobs on GUMTREE :cool4:
And jobs always in the local rag in whatever city you are staying. Oh & here`s a BIG tip, don’t tell them your a backpacker/traveller, employers get pissed off with backpackers starting work then a few weeks later jacking in the job & pissing off on their travels, i used to say "Yep ive just emigrated over here to Australia" this will double your chances of finding work. Mezo. |
Sweet thanks Mezo!

Try Gumtree, great places for causal and 1 off jobs in Australia
|
When you arrive, join some agencies, hand out cv's and hope for the best.
