Desert Camping?
I've been thinking to load the tent in the back of the Landy and go do some camping in the south - maybe Erg Chigaga.
A bit of Googling, however, returns exactly zip-dee-do on the possibility setting up one's own little place for a night or two of star gazing amongst the dunes. All I get is ads for tent hotels with chemical potties and folklore shows. What gives here? Is independent camping just not done in Morocco? Do bad things happen to people who try? Am I just so crap at inter-tube research that I am not seeing the blindingly obvious? |
Yeah it's really dangerous at those tent hotels

Sorry smartphone issues. Rest of the post got cut off
Wildcamping is not a problem. Find a nice quiet spot and set up camp. Someone may turn up to see what you doing but not issues otherwise. Very hot and windy down there at the moment though. Doesn't make for a pleasant dune camp Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Alright. Thanks! I was beginning to wonder if I was just missing something.
Now I've seen this: iOverlander | Erg Chegaga, which seems to recommend getting closer to Foum Zguid than M'Hamid to get away from the tourist industry. And an old thread from this forum talking about Erb Chebbi: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...uestions-16156 Both of which say the same thing basically. As to the heat and the wind - isn't feeling like you're being cooked and sand-blasted at the same time part of the charm of the desert? |

Currently staying above 30 degrees over night in Zagora/Foum Zguid until around 3 am. Main reason I'm on my way back home and not staying another couple of weeks.
Mhamid end and the north side of the dunes are where most of the tourist camps. Warm and still is best for dune camps imho. Sand in the beer is no good at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
