I know skype has been blocked but what about WhatsApp??

Seems to vary according to whether you are using a mobile directly with 3G/4G or going through someone's wifi hub onto a landline. But some wifi hubs are driven by a mobile so they are affected as well.

If you install a VPN service like PrivateInternetAccess you'll be able to bypass any blocks they may have put in place, costs a couple of quid a year and keeps you safe from prying eyes - amongst other advantages. Highly recommended, especially for travel in areas with paranoid governments!
