Engravings in Morocco?

Hi! We are going to down south Morocco in short time, to give my nieces a different perspective of an arab-berber country. We will be wandering in our trusty BJ73 by Maharch, Sidi Ali, Zagora, Mhamid, Jbel Bani, Iriki and Foum Zguid, among other places. Whilst we are proficient in the physical environment, know much less of prehistoric examples. Any location (with coordinates, if possible) where rock engravings can be found in that area, would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and cheers anyway.

Easiest for you to find will be Foum Chenna, see Moyen Draa. Gravures libyco-berbères | Le sud de l'Atlas | GRAVURES RUPESTRES

Head south from Ouarzazate to Zagora, first stop and view the Tansikht sauropod footprints on the west side of the main N9 road, 100m before the N'kob turnoff, waypoint N30 41.080 W6 11.680

Still heading south on the N9, take a piste to the west, at N30 30.278 W6 06.117 which is 50m before the Total fuel station. The main group of engravings are at the foum (mouth) of the Chenna at N30 29.110 W6 10.124 There's another group following the probably dry river bed 700m to the south west.

Thank you so much, Tim. That is a mine of data. I will make WP of most sites, both for Garmin and Ozi. In return, should anyone wish to have them, just let me know.

Cheers

There is a chap who runs a cafe in Alnif who is incredibly knowledgeable of these things. Young fellow ,very friendly with good french and english skills.

I spoke to him for some time and he knew of a lot of sites in the vicinity. He also had a number of french books that wrote about all the ancient history sites in southern Maroc. I was off to visit one site when I nearly broke my ankle after coming off so I had to get myself back to civilization so I never got to see some 3000 year old cave paintings a million miles from anywhere!

Sorry I can't be more precise, but if you are leaving Alnif on the way to Rissani on the N12 it is the last cafe on the RHS. it is quite unusual as it is lower than the road.

Thanks for that info. Everything going well, this time we will pass south of Alnif westwards (Maharch, Kem-Kem Mts., Sidi Ali, Zagora). But this is an area we visit often, and for sure we will drop sooner or later in that cafe.

Cheers,
