Ferry-Tarifa to Tangier ville
All my recent crossings in a 4x4 have been Algeciras to Tangier Med which is calm and orderly. A friend suggested using the Tarifa to Tangier ville crossing. It would be more convenient as I normally camp at Tarifa or if there’s a group of us meeting up at the lovely Hurricane hotel.
Has anybody got recent experience? I crossed at Ceuta years ago which was manic, doesn’t worry me much but for first time visitors the melee can be off putting. I wondered how Tangier ville compared. Thanks, Nick |
Tangier Ville is the fastest crossing. It is a smaller ferry taking only 20 vehicles, which means the customs is done quickly.
The last departure is at 5 p.m. I think. It is more expensive, about €20 for a vehicle with driver. You arrive in central Tangiers, with the medina and hotels 300 meters from the port. All in all, it is much better than Ceuta, and better than Tanger Med if you don't mind coming into town, or perhaps see that as an advantage. And if you are already in Tarifa... |
Nick:
If you do take the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier ville, please come back to this discussion and let us know what it was like. I think many of us would be interested in knowing how easily you went through customs at Tangier ville,, where you bought insurance, whether you were pestered by touts, what security at the Tangier ville port was like, etc. Michael |

I entered Tarifa to Tanger Ville nearly a month ago, still here.
There's various size ferries on the route, didn't see any small ones. The two operators are FRS (good) and Intershipping (some bad stuff in the distant past). In summer they run every two hours, one company on even time numbers, the other on odd. In winter time it stretches to every four hours. Passport control is done on the ferry, customs is currently excruciatingly slow due to the online D16TER programme ceasing. Didn't see a single tout. There's an exchange place, ATM and insurance office in Tanger Ville on the left after your finish with customs. |
