GPS ref format help
Hoping someone can help with what I am sure is a very basic question!
I'm currently in Marrakech about to set out to do my first overland route from Chris Scott's book. I wanted to check I'm using his GPS coordinates right. I have a garmin oregan 300 loaded with t4a and have Olaf as well. My gps asks for coordinates in hddd°mm.mmm (map datum WGS84, map Spehroid WGS 84) format for example I am sat at N31°37.522 W007°59.292. Chris gives coordinates such as N30°31.91' W07°55.31 How do I expand these figures to 7 digit ones? For example do I add a 5 as the last figure so that I am in the middle? There are also lots of other formats for grids but nothing that seems to relate to the 6 figure ones chris uses. I want to be sure I am using this unit correctly before I head out into the wild! Thanks in advance!! |
What you use is Dregees minutes.3decimals what he uses is Degrees minutes.2decimals. The las decimal is about a few meters so not so important unless he is using another map datum but as WGS 84 is most used I don't think so. Most probably it is mentioned somewhere in the book.
Just add a 0 GRTZ, JP |
JP is right. I would not get bogged down with GPS waypoints until something goes wrong.
The tracks are use in the book are clear as a bell and Olaf (occasionally a little misaligned) will be a far more useful aid, day to day. Ch |
