GPX files for Morocco Overland routes?
I recently bought the excellent book, “Morocco Overland”.
I wanted to put the routes in to my GPS. Having some problems and missing some files. Anyone have the same issue and already found a fix? From Morocco Overland ~ Routes It gives a link to Index of /MO-gpx-routes and says that there will be 49 files (and there are 56 routes in the new book). However, there are only 39 files in the various directories there. In seems that some files are missing. For example there is a file for mw1,2,3,6 and but no 4 and 5 When importing the files that are there in to basecamp (on windows) two of the files (ma1g, me5g) produce an error and do not import correctly. In ma1g I was able to edit the file and get it to import correctly after removing the special character between A and t in the below section of text <cmt>A•t Herbil</cmt> <desc>A•t Herbil</desc> me5g seems to be in a completely different format from the other files: Format: DMM M/D/Y H:M:S 1.00 hrs Datum[116]: WGS 84 ID Name Comment Date Time Latitude Longitude Icon Display Option Altitude W ME5KM000 Korima Pass 11/08/2009 17:03:44.000 32¡19.700' -2¡48.300' Waypoint NS |
I'm sure Chris will be along with some advice.it may be the book has been updated but the files not.
I vaguely recall having some issues but can't be certain. I just input the waypoints from the book into mapsource manually |
Hi Bokad,
I just answered your email with the same queries and a few others. Not all MO routes have gpx files as they just don't need them. Thanks for spotting the errors in the ma1g, me5g downloads. I just uploaded corrected files here. I have not added the six new routes from edition 2 as that service seemed to have been little used for the effort involved. I was waiting for someone to actually ask, and now you have done so I will get round to it, although as Warden says, if necessary it can all be done manually off the page. Ch PS: I have noticed that the MA Route Maps on p177 and 195 have got Routes MA6 and MA9, 11, 13 the wrong way round. Clarification here, updated map here. |

Hi Chris,
I've sent you an email and hopefully that will reach you but in case it doesn't I've copied out the content here. Can you help? Thanks. "I get the following when I right click on a file - there's no option to 'download'. I'm using Chrome but get a similar issue when trying with IE8. Can you help?" Attachment 12046 Regards, Steve |
Hi Steve, got your email. It seems you are right. Right-click download works with Safari (for Mac) but not with Firefox.
I have now put all the files in a zip folder (as someone suggested). [url]http://www.morocco-overland.com/routes/MO-gpx-routes.zip [url]http://sahara-overland.com/MO-gpx-routes.zip When I click on those links they download in a second, hopefully for you too. Chris |

You need software like Mac GPS Pro (not free). Others for PCs I am sure.
Or possibly one of the Garmin apps, Base Camp, Map Schmap etc. But I also get mixed up or forget what is what until I need to do it. But if you are talking about Moroco Overland routes, I would not bother. Keep it simple, use a paper map, Olaf + your eyes. Tracks in Mk are very clear. Only when you lose a track or find yourself on the wrong one is it handy to conform this on a GPS/satnav correlated with the nearest waypoints in the book. Once you know that visualise where you should be (N S E or W). Most MO routes are on Olaf and a track log (continuous line, even if not always 100% accurate) is 10x more useful than occasional wpts. |

I have downloaded the zip file but the folders are empty... For example the gpx files have a size of 2KB... Is it possible to email me the files? Thanks a lot in advance Regards from Portugal Saul |

Hi Saul, I just tested the download link on this post below for the latest edition of the book (out shortly):
They are all there. They are text files - tiny - some even < 1kb. http://www.overlanders-handbook.com/Morocco3gpx.zip It is possible you were trying the old ones which are gone. All is explained on this page: https://sahara-overland.com/morocco-routes/ Read the bit in red. |
Hi Chris,
Thanks a lot! indeed I was trying the old ones! |
