Help With Wikiloc Trail Downloads to Garmin
I am trying to download via Internet Explorer.I cannot get Garmin.gpx files only Acrobat files that will not open unless I use a Garmin Plugin. No matter what I do to my security settings, etc I cannot get this plugin to work and hence get .gpx downloads.
Hope this is clear.Any help welcome. |
When you download a trail from Wikiloc you are given a choice of File - Google Earth - GARMIN - iPhone/Android
Am I right in thinking you are selecting GARMIN? Garmin Communicator is a flakey bit of software and uses plug-ins no longer supported by many browsers. Instead of selecting GARMIN I suggest you select File and choose .gpx as the format. You then need to get the .gpx file over to the GPS. What model of Garmin GPS do you have? If you have Mapsource or Basecamp software on your PC you can open the .gpx file with these and transfer it to your device. If you don't have these programs you need to google for instructions on how to transfer the .gpx to your particular GPS. |
Hi Tim
Once again thanks for your help. I have a Garmin Nuvi 2597 and Mapsource.I have now successfully downloaded as you suggested but I am new to Mapsource and cannot see how to upload the file into Mapsource. Your advice would be much appreciated.:( |
Open Mapsource, then >file >open the .gpx file in Mapsource to check it looks OK. It might show up in Mapsource as either a track or a route.
If it's a tracklog it may have many hundreds of via points logged. Your GPS won't be able to handle so many so you need to simpify the track by clicking on it, selecting >filter and reducing the maximum points to 350. Connect the GPS unit to the PC, then >transfer >send to device and click 'tracks' (or routes if the .gpx contained routes instead). If there's some waypoints you could also download those. I did try Facetiming you earlier but I think you mustn't have one of these modern Apple gizmos. But feel free to call me. |
The problem is that I can't get it to open in Mapsource. I can see the downloaded file on my C drive location but cannot see it when I access the C Drive directories in Mapsource. It seems MapS cannot see it on the C Drive.

If you don't have a SD slot in the laptop try using a USB flash drive Wayne |
When you try to open in Mapsource and it shows the directory of files, under 'types of file' click on 'all files'
Failing that, try double clicking on the file in Windows Explorer. |
Eureka.They are in.bier
Thanks Tim and also Wayne-i will try that one later once my brain has cooled down! |
