Mapping Morocco
Planning my trip to morrocco, for next summer.
What paper map to do people recomend as I have been recomended that many of the paths marked on maps do not exist any more, or this a lie to scare people off?? Also I have a Garmin colorado for this kind of thing does anyone have any experince with the Garmin Topo Morrocco, is it any good?? |
top morocco is the best you can get.
And buy a michellin morocco map and there you go. Amazon.com: Michelin Morocco Map No. 959 (Michelin Maps & Atlases) (9782067009592): Michelin Travel Publications: Books |
many of the paths marked on maps do not exist any more...
Certainly some pistes are becoming sealed, but I found there are many more rideable paths than are shown on today's paper maps. I do a review of the best Mk mapping here. The paper one's are all as bad on the piste, but it's only Morocco, so with as full tank you can work it out and enjoy some exploring. If you're into Sat Nav have a look here too. It's better than you think, at least for towns. Ch |
Hi,
Depends if you are more into tarmac or pistes. Anyway, during my visits to Morocco I've always used Michelin 742 as paper map and Morocco Topo from Olaf on the GPS - it runs on Garmin GPS, at least on my 60CSx and my old Etrex Legend. You can dowload the map for free following this link: GPS Vector Map Morocco Hope it helps, CaBRita |
Just to put my thoughts across .... I've always used paper maps, and I have the Michelin 742 but I found a waterproof plastic (read. Un-tearable) map of Morocco Morocco Rough Guide Map
Although it has the same resolution as the Michelin, it shows a lot more tracks and pistes. |
Mate i would suggest you do 2 thing register with UKGSr forum UKGSer :::: For BMW GS Enthusiasts there is a Morocco forum
Morocco GS Knowledgebase - ::. UKGSer.com .:: Tim Cullins (he is on here, or i thought he was) a wealth of info just flows out of him. He has forgot more than he knows about that area. he was very helpful for me, however I have had to cancel my trip around Morocco for this year. |
Chris Scott's page on Morocco maps is good research. The Michelin 742 map used to be the best with some sections at 1:600,000 but I agree with Chris that the new Rough Guide map is at least as good despite being at 1:1,000,000. On my last two trips I used both maps side-by-side. For my next trip in a couple of weeks time I shall be taking only the Rough Guide.
I haven't had the chance to compare Olaf's Marok Topo against Garmin's and Tom Tom's offerings, but Olaf's is free whereas the cost of the others is excessive for most one-time visitors. So that's a vote for Olaf. The best link for UKGSer is to the Morocco forum |
The garmin's topo is routable. It is much easier to use .
