Maps / routes?
 

I'm heading south from the UK soon, heading slowly to Morocco. When in Morocco, I'm only using maps; no GPS. I'm using a Reise map, although at home I also have a Freytag and Berndt map. I have to admit that in Europe, I do rely heavily on my satnav. It's my first time in Morocco, and I guess I'm a little anxious about he accuracy of these maps / finding the correct route when using pistes. I'm looking forward to the 'foreign' nature of this part of my trip, but am worried about getting lost! Has anyone else used them? Is there a better one I should consider?

I guess my main issue is that I don't normally use paper maps, and I'm probably just getting worried about the unknown! Any suggestions would be welcome!

It's all in here:- Morocco Overland ~ the website for the book Lots of info on Morocco mapping showing the advantages/disadvantages of each. I use the RKH on the road as it's very durable and the Michelin 742 for indoors only! You might be able to track down some of the old TPC aerial maps but they're huge and 20+ years out of date.

You can follow Chris's routes just by using the odometer on your bike and reading the notes.

You'll not get too lost - tracks have got to go somewhere. It's not like Libya where you could find yourself on an oil exploration track and end up in a scruffy drilling plant.

Thanks for the info, Peter. I'll check out the site. The closeness of my departure's probably just making me worry unecessarily.

Take a compass. Align map with it so you can head out of deep ca-ca.

Don´t worry, the roads are well indicated with panels

I use Michelin maps which I coat with clear sticky-back plastic from WHSmiths. It takes a lot of patience to keep the creases flat, but I've used the same map for 2 extensive trips in Morocco with multiple folding back and forth to convenient size and it's still perfectly serviceable with no tears. I normally have Maroc Topo, (or "Olaf") on my Garmin 276, but usually purely to confirm I am where I think I am! Navigation by map is not really too difficult in Morocco as the trail network is not very dense - you're quite likely to either be on the right track, more or less, or heading off on the wrong bearing.
Have fun - being outside the comfort zone heightens the sense of achievement, and if you get too close to Algeria, someone in a green Toyota pickup will likely be along to point you in the right direction anyway! ie North!-)
