MH1 anyone

Hi all
Just planning our ( My Son and I ) three week trip to Morocco in September/ October
We’ve seen quite a few vids of MH1 but last one was 4 years ago and wanted to know If it’s still rideable
I’ve searched the forum but can’t find any newer info
Thanks in advance

Last I heard it's all sealed bar the south side of the 3000m+ Ouano pass (KM157) down to Tilmi and Dades valley. There's also a diversion/new road at the east end round a big landslide from what is written in the book.
It's a great ride.

Many thanks for the reply Chris

MH1

To avoid Cirque Jaffar, head W from Midelt on the N13. After 4km take the obvious junction L, opposite the large mesa rock structure. N32°42.5 W04°52.1 .

It's easy going on tarmac to begin with up to the T junction with the track coming in from Cirque Jaffar on the left, N32°31.7 W04°59.5.

In about 6km, at Itachimen, N32°31.1 W05°03.4, you'll have to turn right up to the dam. The valley is now flooded and there is no river crossing below Tizi-n-Zou village. Rejoin the track (now tarmac) in about 3km.

Continue W towards the MH1/MH21 junction near Tounfite and turn SE to follow MH1.

As Chris said, after Agoudal it's all new fast tarmac up to the top of the pass at Km157.

Happy trails,

Peter

I rode MH1 the other day from Tounfit and have to say, from the state of the road, I think I will reclassify it as a piste in the new edition.

As I mentioned elsewhere here, much of the road west to the Imilchil N12 junction is potholed or has lost its asphalt altogether (especially over 2200m). It would get pretty gruelling in a van.
At the Tounfit end they're putting big new bridges in; maybe the start of a 100-km refurb?

The 2900-m Ouano pass is freshly sealed 22km from Agoudal to the summit. From there, diggers are working their way down the 16km to the Tilmi valley road along rough and not yet widened piste (pic), with thickly ground dust from the machinery.

And from Tilmi the road is pretty patchy for 21km until the Gorge to Gorge junction.
Near the summit they were still chipping away at 6pm, but I imagine it will take them the rest of the year, let alone redoing the current road from Tilmi to G2G junction.

The Tounfit road took a bad hammering with winter storms a few years ago and they haven't appear to done much in the way of repairs, but if it keeps the huge influx of Whiteboxes on the bigger roads I'm not sure I mind too much.

Mid October surveys where marking out the widen piste down to Tilmi, but they've been working on it since pre covid with out much visible progress. Notable addition this year is the building that looks like it might be an auberge restaurant when finished.

Tarmac will come eventually and we'll lose the last real North South piste of the High Atlas for good, so make the most of it before its gone for ever.
