We are just camping by Orion. I'd say they are not accessible by 2WD. They are now closed, subject to a 200m exclusion zone enforced by the guardians. So you can look from a distance. They are now managed by a foundation who say they are not safe. Rather sad.

Real shame they're not open any more. When I stopped last in 2015 the Stairway was closed due to a tourist falling down the ladder and trying to sue, but the City of Orion and the Golden Spiral were still open.

Exclusion zone was there in 2011, along with Ibrahim, as a result of damage caused by people camping there and vandalism to the structures.

Sounds like your still having a blast :D
