Stella Alpina Rally
hi,
Any intrepid travellers thinking of going to the Stella Alpina Rally this year? Cheers, Paul |
Quite possibly?
My girlfriend & I are thinking of going, riding down on a pair of 1150GS'. Another friend may be going two up on an 1150 also. We're thinking of going Val d'Isere & Col de l'Iseran on the D902 & meeting up with another guy on the afternoon of Friday 8th July at the Col. I can think of one or two others who may be going as well? If we go, we plan to sail from Dover on the afternoon of Wednesday 6th July, travel 50-100 miles max, hotel for the night & an early start the following morning. The route will be N roads all the way, no motorway & tolls. |
hi Steve
Sounds like a great itinerary... Do you think you might have room for another GS in your party? I'm not too far from you (Warwick), so we could maybe meet up for a local ride out before hand to discuss it some more ... Cheers, Paul |
I´ll be coming up.
2004 was OK, but not many riders: http://spanishbob.smugmug.com/gallery/165109 (Silver GS adv) 2003 lots of people, very very hot (went with the Big Trail Bike club). http://spanishbob.smugmug.com/gallery/67077 NOTE I cant take credit for most of the fotos they belong to others. The beers are on me. bob |
Paul,
Don't see why we can't go together? Let's meet up nearer the time. I'm going to be checking out ferry prices very soon, will let you know how it goes. Bob, What, if any, are the facilities at the Stella site? Toilets & showers or in the nearest bush with a wet flannel? Steve Quote:

This is an unorganised rally in the true spirit of yesteryear: people just meet there, camp, light fires, cook their own grub, drink lots and, most importantly, tell tall tales that get taller as the night wears on. Also, remember, this is the highest rally in Europe. It gets nippy at night and it's often damp. Having said all that there are a few options for the softies: At the main site there is a "rifugio", a mountain hut, which serves food and drinks non-stop. There are toilets and (cold) showers. They also have the usual bunk accommodation, but I guess it's booked out long in advance. People also camp at other spots further down. There, there are no facilities whatsoever. A significant number of people choose to stay in various hotels, etc. in Bardonecchia. But, be aware that it's a long ride along a winding dirt track in the dark to get back down. You want to be sober for this one. Finally, the last time I was there the cops had set up a checkpoint at the bottom of the road and were stopping all trail bikes coming down. I don't know what for; revenue gathering presumably. This is probably my favourite rally, just because there is no organisation, nothing to pay, no band, stupid contests, etc. Great atmosphere. Sadly, we'll miss it again this year, as we'll be going from the HUBB meeting to Scandinavia en route to NZ. Have fun and ride safely. ------------------ Salut from Southern France, the bikers' paradise, Peter. |
Just phoned P&0, they have a special offer for July. Normal price for one person & a bike with the MCN discount sailing Docer/Calais & return is £78.00, now £66.50. Could be a bit cheaper still if you sailed before 0630 or after 200hrs. We're sailing out on 06/07 at 1640 & returning on 12/07 at 1840 local time.

Near or at the top of the thread list are three threads entitled Adv.Rider EU or European Rally. They are "sticky" & stay near the top.

couldn t go, how was it ?

The stella was great. We went up the run early and seemed to miss most of the plonkers who thought they were on a mountain rally stage.
Stayed at Bokki camping, fantastic. www.bokki.it Mike. |
