680 Montana screen freeze
OK, I'm currently crossing Canada following dedicated TCAT tracks and my screen has frozen. I've Googled it and tried the soft reset many times but nothing.... I've watched a YouTube guy who shows how to do a kind of 'next level' reset by pressing one of the screen corners whilst also pressing the power on/off button (memory card removed) but a tad hesitant to do this until I know more about his trick/ findings....
Has anyone had a similar screen freeze situation they couldn't rectify on there Montana..???? Sent from my SM-G781B using Tapatalk |
I had problems on a 700i that I think were caused by loading the OSM gmapsupp on the main drive rather than an SD card. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Updating the firmware and doing a reset made no improvement. I deleted the file in the wrong location and replaced it on an SD card. Still wasn't great, needed to buy/download Garmin's City Navigator and that seemed to fix it. Topoactive would be as good I expect. I get the impression Garmin devices are a bit flaky with free OSM.

@MEZ Try emailing Garmin in the meantime, I couldn't get mine to charge on the bike and I emailed them, I had a reply with in 24 hours, and the issues was solved Wayne |

Touch wood, since buying Garmin's maps it navigates OK. Bit of a pain that I can't use the free ones but in the big scheme of things, I can live with it. |
When you say the screen has frozen - do you mean the map has stopped moving, or the whole device has locked up?
Either way, before you do that hold the corner of the screen thing and power on (which will wipe all your 'user data' or so it appears - they do come back again) I would remove the battery and let it sit for a couple of hours... that often does the trick. If it's specifically the map which is not moving, then again, remove the battery, and also check your SD card is lined up properly in the slot (they can rattle loose, especially on rough terrain) and consider sticking a piece of sellotape over the hinge/SD card to stop it moving in future.
