Garmin 62 S
New software update for the 62 S is available via Garmin's Web Updater
|
I've looked at this unit. Looks great on a bike...
Any good if I travel in a car though ?? Maybe a Zumo would be better. I'd like a new GPS that I can use on car/bike with no fuss. |
For your 'no fuss' option, personally I'd opt for the Montana just because of its larger screen Ted.
The 62S is fine on a bike too but the screen is obviously harder to read due to its size when mounted. My personal preference is to ride on the compass page with the CDI so it's not so much of an issue but I confess that the Montana screen is easier for tired eyes and when bouncing around too. The 62S is my backup and 'walkabout' unit- being smaller & more discreet, making tracks in unknown towns helping to track-back to tent/hole-in-the-ground/dog shed/ or B&B !! New Tip The Montana has been designed to work with BaseCamp and not MapSource although it will work with that one but it will cause issues like way point duplication etc in Montana. |
Hmm looks like I might be going the way of the ZUMO 500/550 etc.
I do like mapsource and everything is made for it. I'm heading to Eastern Europe/Stans/Western Europe next year so I'm hoping the ZUMO will be as easy to use and fiddle with as my trusty but very very tired 2610. |
Zumo's were popular - some love them!
specs here then compare Montana specs here side by side Hope this helps you decide - Equipment, as with so many other things in life, is all down to personal needs and preferences. Horses for courses but avoid the donkeys! |

I'm put off the montana by price and lack of mapsource i'm afraid... I think Zumo is the winner due to it's versatility. I'm travelling in a Citroen Berlingo Multispace on this next trip. |
Ted - BaseCamp software is free from Garmin. It is very similar to mapsource but with new useful options like drag-N-drop files etc.
You can use mapsource with the Montana but need to be aware of a few 'quirks' that is all. |
Basecamp?
I have never used it before. I guess it time to update that side of GPS life as well and learn how to use BaseCamp. |
