Garmin 76csx
For a Round World Trip, do you recommend Garmin 76csx?

I prefer the 60 csX as a handheld- one of the reasons is that the buttons are in the right place
i.e below the map screen. Try to operate a 70csx in one hand and you'll wish for the 60csX.... Much the same on price 60csX better unit IMHO answer for Grizzly7 I carry 4 AA's (2 in gps) + 2 charging/or in Fenix LD20 + 6 AAA ) 3 in Petzl & 3 charging/spare + power lead to power from handlebar or 4x4 12volt outlet Individual choice! |
The cx is the same as the csx but without electronic compass or barometer, both of which will eat battery life although Garmins site states the same life for both?! In the spirit of not relying on a gps you would obviously carry a compass anyway, but even so why would you need a battery powered one?! And a barometer? why???!!! How many AA's are you carrying?!
Can you get a bike friendly power lead? Bizarrely the csx is today cheaper on amazon than the cx though! |
I have had a 76CSX for 3 years and it works great.
The ram mounts for bike are better than the ones to the 60's. The buttons ? They are on the front, they work. The power is from a car lighter cord not a USB, the same as the 60 units. Edit, I just saw the post above. They don't eat battries. I have power plugs on my BMW R1200GS, KLR650,BMW R100R. If you don't want the "S" (sensor) compass you can turn it off or on. |
Was wondering what sort of socket is actually on the unit to receive the car lighter leads power?

On the back there are two ports on USB and a larger one that will take a power cord.
you can ger one that has a plug on it for a car lighter or one the you can splice into a power lead. See picture. |
Actually, any GPS will be connected to my motorcycle.
I had a Tom Tom Rider 2, and first it wasn´t connected and was a really problem when the battery ends. |

Is the compass accurate? What mapping are you using? bill |

I don't pay attention to the compass, I use it for the maps, routing, speedometer. |
