Garmin eTrex Vista (monochrome model)
I am looking into all the various GP's out there but this model has caught my eye for it's apparent simplicity yet good range of functionality.
I am only looking to get a GPS as a backup system. Good old maps, compasses and dead reckoning work well for me. Any advice or experiences you have had with the Vista would be appreciated. |
Hi,
I have the green etrex. Don't know exactly what model that is, but it is as good as any. On the first one, the rubber grommet on that joy stick thing broke, and then it got stolen. I replaced it with the same thing which did 30.000km's now and it's fine. Shows you where you are, and shows you where to go. enjoy |
Bossies,
See my post at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000218.html re: Garmin eTrex. I have the Legend-C. Difference, other than being less expensive, is the lack of a constant compass (and I think an altimeter or barometer). I have had excellent success with the e-Trex. |
had a vista; very good unit. LLBean here has on sale for $199.
make sure you get unit with compass built in, and AA batteries; the downloadable maps are very helpful. you will like the Vista-C better, the color screen makes it easier to see what is a river, what is a road. |
Yeah...not bad
Used an etrex Summit for quite a while and it is a good unit, if you are attatching it to the handlebars on a bike then i would think about getting a different model of gps though, the battery connectors on the etrex are poorly designed and vibrations on a bike will cause the power lead to fall out - needing you to use duck tape to secure it on !!!
In vehicle on the garmin dash mount it is fine, a great little gps. the compass feature is quite handy. The master reset for the etrex models is to hold in the up,page, power and enter buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds.......mine locked up in Morocco and I had to email Garmin to find that out !!!
