Garmin unit POI limits overcome - how to?
 

Is this of any interest?
Some garmin units only offer 3000,[older units possibly less] some 5000 and the latest 10,000 of your own POIs' but Man being a greedy animal...:whistling:, how does having over 200 thousand grab you? :biggrin: *** evidence below.

and be able to chose whether to have some with speed or proximity alarms and also to create your own categories in 'Extras' :smartass:
and the great advantage, aside from being able to store a huge amount of info, is that once tranferred, it frees up the POI limits within your unit- i.e if you have say 2000 pois out of a max of say 3000, transferring them releases space and brings your editable POIs store to 0 out of 3000! (or more)
The only drawback with this method is that transferred POIs by this method CANNOT be edited on your satnag but IMHO, it is a small price to pay.

Uh, what you have posted there about "points of interest" is not the same as "waypoints".

A "waypoint" is a position fix that you create - either on the device itself, or on BaseCamp or MapSource and then load into the device. You can navigate to, from, or through waypoints.

A "point of interest" is a position fix for some type of item - almost always speed cameras, but it could be campgrounds, or your favourite brand of gas station, or Starbucks locations. These items will appear on the device display screen when they come into view, and you can choose to be alerted to them when you are approaching them, but you cannot use them for navigation purposes. In other words, you can't route to or from them, and you can't look them up on your device.

The other disadvantage associated with "points of interest" is that you have to manually create them as latitude / longitude fixes, and then put them into a spreadsheet format to enable them to be imported by the POI Manager. If you are obtaining a list of POIs from another source (e.g. motorcycle dealership list, speed camera list, campsite list, etc.) this is no problem, but it's a major job if you want to create your own list.

My terminology may have caused you some confusion.

ALL of the above are individual waypoints with latitude and longitute and ALL are totally customizeable.
By this I mean each can contain text of your choosing, weblinks, address and phone numbers, email etc.

POI means Point Of Interest and yes, I use Garmins' free POI Loader to send them to my units ( all 6 of them :blushing:)
They can ALL:

• Be found using 'Find'
• Be categorized to save scrolling through endless lists
• Have proximity or speed alerts associated to each file
• Each file can have its own dedicated icon
• Be navigated to

But you are right in your last paragraph, it IS a lot of work!

POI can be constructed in Mapsource or Basecamp as ordinary waypoints and then loaded as POI. Very easy to do. I have several POI libraries for Morocco organised as hotels, fuel, camping, food, sights, etc.

Once selected on the unit you can navigate to it or include it on routes.
