Garmin Zumo 660 now shows routes only «as the crow flies»
Have a Garmin Zumo 660 and lately on my way north through Peru the device has more and more problems finding an actual route. GPS can easily find waypoints such as cities, hotels, gas stations and adresses and maps are detailed - but when showing route to the chosen destination it only shows a straight line «as the crow flies» maybe with a few bends, not along a road or a track.
Maps were downloaded around 6 months ago and I did a software update around 3-4 months ago. Any useful advices and help welcome. TIA |
Bizarre!
All I can think of is:

I forgot to mention that Im using OSM maps if that matter. I tried to turn off the OSM maps completely and use only the world base map that are on the device. In fact the routes became a bit more more accurate as they at least where following the roads to a certain extend. But still not accurate as it normally is. |
Be sure to back all your data - routes, favourites, waypoints etc BEFORE you do any of the following!
Restart - this is only a full restart instead of a master reset, and is not supposed to lose any data. But... 1 Hold the "Power" button for at least ten seconds. 2 Release the "Power" button after the device powers off. 3 Press the "Power" button again to finish the reset. Master Reset Be sure to back up EVERYTHING - this WIPES it CLEAN to factory original new! 1 Turn off the Zumo and disconnect any power cable from the unit. 2 Hold down your finger in the lower-right corner of the screen. 3 Hold the "Power" button, releasing it only after the Zumo turns on. 4 Release your finger from the lower-right corner of the screen after a "Do you really want to erase all user data?" message appears. 5 Tap "Yes" if you're SURE Then reload all your data. Obviously try Reset first! You MIGHT also try reloading the OSM maps with a new version just for kicks and giggles. good luck, |
Thanks for for trying to help out Grant, much appriciated!
I have done both the Restart and the full Master Reset, the last without erasing data. It didnt help out for the problems though. I dont carry a PC when I travel so theres no way to reload maps into the GPS just like that. I might have to do it though at some stage. It could be that the maps are a little default in this area. I took a ride around town where Im staying right now and some streets seemed like missing. The same on my Mapsme app on my phone actually. I will wait until Im in Equador and see if it gets any better. |
Although not a 660 user may I suggest the following. Are you sure that Direct Routing is disabled, the following copied from an online forum:
Main menu Setup Routing Activity then pick one of the options such as automobile driving NOT Direct routing. there are several other options such as Motor bike, Hiking, Pedestrian and Mountain biking. |
I find this interesting because my Garmin 64 GPS also showed some bizarre behaviour in Peru and I to was using OSM maps.
In my case it would also often default to direct routing (or as the crow flies) but I could always go into the settings to get it to change back to auto-routing. However even when I did this it would often give bizarre route choices. Never found a real solution but the problem disappeared as I moved north into Ecuador. I did wonder if it was associated with the underlying algorithm or map failing to properly cope with the extreme altitude variations that occur in that country. As I got closer to the border of Equador the GPS started to work normally again. So as Navalaechitect and at least one other guy on another forum said - the OSM maps doesnt work well in northern Peru. Thats it, very strange but true.
Thanks for all inouts and suggestions!:thumbup1: |
