Would you believe City Navigator South America + a host of free ones including OSM?

Was this a trick question? :innocent:

Sth America

Nah...no trick question !!! I bought my gps about 4 years ago so was looking for information on which brand (ie: Tomtom or Garmin etc) is most reliable etc today. As for maps I have never been to South America so have never looked until now, we used 'Tracks for Africa' when we did that continent. I know there would be alot out there but I was really after what would be the best & why. Not really if there free or not.

Cheers
Paul

That's a bit like how long is a piece of string!
Choice depends on a host of things like :
- your desire and willingness to take the time to learn about a new unit
- the amount of cash you are willing to spend as you may also want to wire the unit into your vehicle and it may need a bespoke mount so more $, time and effort.
- and so on and so on

any gps receiver, even the really really old one like the gps III will give your location and the ability to navigate to a waypoint.

Price goes up when unit abilities grow aka black and white screen or colour, internal memory, memory size, ability to add external memory , screen size, handheld or vehicle mounted, waterproof or not, android powered or not, ad infinitum.

I remember reading a long time ago about some computer software use survey which IBM did with their employees- I think the result was that even the most able only used about some 12% of the power/facilities available!
So rather than waste a lot of money on stuff you may never use, it would really help to know what you really need to have.
Might I suggest a good way to help you decide and others to chip in with their suggestion to help would be for you make a small list of the unit 'must be able to do' then work form there? There are just too many choices out there.
