GPS bundle for UK->India - what to buy
:helpsmilie:
Just to check my understanding (since the $$ involved is not exactly trivial and it's my first GPS): I want to buy a GPS that will help me get un-lost anywhere in Iran/Pakistan/India. After reading the HUBB, it appears that I need three things: 1. The GPS: The Garmin 60CSx (£212 from HandTec) 2. The memory card: SanDisk Micro SDHC 4GB Card (£5 from amazon.co.uk) 3. The maps: Smellybiker Wanderlust ($50 for all maps for 1 year) Is that it? Compatibility issues? Additional software I will need? (I will take care of mounting/recharging later) Thanks! |
Hi there,
On my trip from Holland to Nepal end 2008 I did use a Samsung mobile telephone with GPS and the small Vito Smartmap GPS software. It did work fine, but now I think that the Garmin is mutch better for a trip like this. I am interested in the advice from other people so I am going to follow this thread. Enjoy the beautifull trip and if you like to see some movies or read our story about this trip: Going East - Home |
Post-mortem
Just to close this thread and for posterity, yes, the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx was perfectly adequate. I bought a 4GB Micro SDHC card and pre-loaded all countries I wanted to visit from OpenStreetMap.org maps that I created with the help of http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php
I also pre-loaded POIs (mostly campsites and hotels) from http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...eearth-36431-6 (check you're downloading the latest & greatest by Ulrich) Worked like a charm. I also had a USB converter for the SDHC card, so if I wanted to add additional maps I could just find any PC and put new files on it. Happy travels! -A |
