Well I can see by the threads here they are dated back to 2009. Hopefully now in 2012 I can ask the same question & maybe get more up to date information...

what is the best GPS map to download on my Garmin for Ecuador??

I think that South America in general has always had a very strong OSM contributor base. Check out the existing coverage at OpenStreetMap . Zoom in on Equador and see if the detail is sufficient for your needs. If so, go to Free worldwide routable Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap and follow the instructions for downloading.

While you're in the OSM site, check out the mapping of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It's a wonder to behold.

Did anyone ever find a good map of columbia? I'm in Cartagena right now and I could really use one!
