GPS Mounts
 

Just my opinion is this but....

Before the trip to India I bought a Touratech mount for my Garmin GPS. Its has rubber mounts between the handlebar mount and the GPS holder so it must be good.

Riding, even on tarmac makes the GPS shake like hell. Most of this is due to the vibrations of the engine (BMW R100GS). At the worst point in the vibration you cant read the GPS, there's so much shaking going on.

There is an inbuilt flaw with these mounts. You cant see the GPS if you mount a tankbag. Useless.
I contacted a guy in the States that makes a solid mount that moves the unit forward, away from the bag. I mounted this bracket onto the Touratech unit to give me more clearance and in the process, removed the rubber bushes from the Touratech mount.
What a difference. The GPS is now rock steady.

Talking to the supplier in the US, I gather that the shocks that could kill your unit are from bottoming the forks. The normal amount of vibes only affects the spring loaded pins that contact the inbuilt battery. The fix for that is to put a strip of tape over the pins and use the bike power.

That's what I did and never a sign of a problem. Solid mounts are the war to go.

He-He... I was a bit disappointed cos it looks like the absolute biz.

The reality on the BM was less than impressive. Maybe OK on a bike with less low frequency vibes.

If you look at the amount your brake reservoir shakes then look at the GPS on the bracket. Then decide.

I've got a TT mount, that is mounted on a RAM ball joint which is then mounted to handlebar. Works well with no vibes and I can cleary see the screen even with tankbag expanded. With the RAM mounts, you can get a higher/taller arm if needed.

What type of GPS do you use?

I have a 276C and have two different mounts for it.

The cheapest has no vibrations:

There is never a problem to see the screen in any conditions, but my airhead is tuned and smooth…

Take a look at migsel.com (Powered by CubeCart) , he makes a variety of mounts for different bikes - well made and robust. I have one on my R1100GS and it's excellent :thumbup1:

Same... 276c and I got the more expensive, lockable mount. I just found that it got much more shaking about than if it was mounted rigidly to the bars.

At the same time the Touratech mount, fouls the Touratech tankbag for the 100GS.

Mine was running smooth but now its very lumpy. Just waiting its return home.
